just inhereted 400 acres of crp land The goverment says to mow one third for next 3 years.According to the farm plan the goverment will underwrite most of this cost. There is a lot of small brush to cut with large horizantal type blade . A fellow at the local farm supply who I asked about tractors and horizantal plane type mowers said I should Look at some kind of a tractor calles a SUPER SIX TRI-DIRECTIONAL I ask if john deere made one of these tractors, He said they were all imported rather hard to find and expensive. I need to find a new one before dec 31 for this years tax break. can any of you farmers help me? I would be more than willing to pay a finders fee. I went to a sales lot near the area where the land is and asked, I was very suprised at the indifference shown about CITY people inheriting land and do not feel because I wear business suits and know nothing about farming one should be so treated. A distant relative suggested this site, sincerely Samuel A Bontregger

The only tri-directional I`ve ever heard of is the Essex. Grab a cup of coffee and do a search here on essex tri-directional. You`ll have hours of fun and informative reading...

He's pulling your leg. There is no such tractor.

That every third year schedule is questionable. In most parts of the country farm ground with two years of brush buildup gets difficult to mow.

If you are determined to do the mowing yourself, you might contact Farm Credit Services in your area about a lease unit. A lot of them do that and it's way cheaper than buying one. After you mow that CRP once or twice you'll have a better idea how much of a "gentleman farmer" you really want to be.

Whether you lease or buy, have someone walk you through all the steps involved in running the equipment, especially including safety, refueling, and fluid level checks.

If you still like doing the work yourself after a couple of times through, you will also have a better idea what kind of equipment you need. Your best - and safest - bet would be to hire the mowing done.

That would be "Essex" not "Super Six," and was a remarkable but extremely rare tractor. Despite an aggressive marketing campaign, it never really caught on -- it simply had too many innovative features at a time when farmers were still suspicious of rubber tires. If you should track one down, let us know, as there are no authenticated pictures of one, and we'd love to see it.

Cold out, jobs are hard to find, and the power company has not came around to shut the power off yet so the computer still up and running.

Did that tri-directional use the same super-six engine as the Essex car? See a fellow here just bought one of the cars. Grew up with a 29 coupe.

That might be the source of the Essex/Super Six confusion but, as far as I know, no, it was a different company.

For the amount of money required to buy a mower and tractor in order to claim the tax deduction you could earn more money off of investing the amount and hiring the work done. I started to say off of interest but is kind of a joke these days.

One should also take into consideration the depreciation of the tractor, its upkeep, safe storage, possibly insurance, etc. before deciding for or against buying one.

The folk on this site like to use their tractors so perhaps one living near you would hire out to custom mow for you for a year so that you will have more time to make choices for a unit if you still desire one.

And yes, farmers can be a little huffy at times. Sorry.

Just because one has never seen something oneself doesn't mean it doesn't exist. There's too much anecdotal information on them to doubt their existence. That pineapple grower from the Yukon used to be kind of an expert. Bill(Wisc) knows a lot about them..........Someone (Ogden Nash, maybe) used to say he'd never seen a purple cow; he didn't say they didn't exist.

The Tri-Directional would be ideal for what you have in mind but they are rare and I doubt you would be able to find one prior to 31 Dec. In that you are willing to pay a finders fee, I recommend that you try to contact a fellow named Mohammad who advertises occasionally in the photo ads. By giving him a down payment/finders fee this year you should be able to deduct that on this years taxes. The more you give him, the more you'll be able to deduct.

I have a quad-directional tractor goes 1)Backwards 2)forward 3)Up when I go over bumps at a high speed 4)Down when I drive off a bank.Which one of these manuvers can the Tridirectional not accomplish?

Is it possible that you were told to look for a Bidirectional Tractor. There is such a thing, the seat and controls turn either way. You can mount a bush hog mower on the back, turn the seat around and drive it backwards cutting brush ahead of yourself and not have to turn your head around and look back like you would in a normal tractor.
Just do a search for Bidirectional Tractor they are available used and still made new.

Its been my experience that if you walk into a dealership in a suit and tie and show your lack of knowledge on farm equipment the price automatically goes up and the "you will most certainly need this also" is pushed very hard.

That "distant relative" who commended this site to you wouldn't happen to be someone named Clem, or Grove r, or perhaps Jake from Jake's Corner, Yukon, would he?

Whoever it is, he hasn't done you any favor if you're trying to buy before the end of the year. Why, I doubt you could even assemble the necessary scientific equipment, much less the search itself, in that time period.

I think "Bontregger" is pulling our collective legs. Were he so concerned about the cityboy-contryboy distinction he announces , I think his spelling would be better.

In the meantime, Prez B O 's post is a classic.

Best!

Go down to "Country Talk" and holler for "Les." He knows all about the Tri-Directionals. He's got some of the last ones produced in the back of one of his sheds.

I have just exactly what you need. It does not have the correct "tri-directional" decals, but for a small fee I can put them on.

I used to know how to spell when I graduated from Purdue then a southern turkey company came to Indiana and Perdue spelling changed. I have been cornfussed ever since!!!!!!!!!!!

Samuel,

Don't believe the others. Here's one, it can be had for the right price.

It is at least an erroneous thread, since the IRS and other government agencies have refused to allow the tax credit due to the fact that the ETD is an imported machine.

Looking back over this thread, its interesting to see how the percentage of people who remember the ETD has declined over the years (what has it been- 6 or 8 years, since the ETD thread got zapped by management?). Life goes on, I guess. It was a great exercise in creative writing, at the time.

The S. S. Tri-Directional is a rare machine, indeed. Much like the mythical Baptist Teetotaler, there are countless tales of encounters with these elusive machines, but your chances of actually finding one are right up there with getting tickets to the Inaugural Ball.

I'm told that the last remaining SSTD was broken up for scrap recently. The twenty ton wrought-iron boiler was worth a pretty penny, not to mention the palladium and other rare metals used its Direct Energy Conversion module.

Just looked back- will be 7 years in January- seems like yesterday. But then, everything seems like yesterday, these days. If you ask me what I had for dinner last night, I will tell you its none of your business, instead of admitting that I can't remember.

I have only been here 4yrs and did'nt know the ESSEX was zaped guess I better stop looking for one then, just have to hide it with the guns& non emission type weedwackers etc. Somebody tell me why a stuck or troubled tractor MUST have mud on the tires, please?

^^^Don't buy the one in the picture above, it has obvious Klingon disruptor damage, and that's hard to fix!
