Food For Thought

We had a discussion at work on trying to decide what the most important discovery man has made thru time. My choice was;

Magnetism, with out it where would we be, no electricity, no navigational instruments-compass, no starters on engines or electric ignition systems. They would all be diesel with crank or air starts.

Some said fire, steel-iron, discovery of oil.

One said all the wheels would stop turning if it waren't for oil. I said they would not start turning if it weren't for magnetism.

It takes fire to melt the steel and steel to be magnetized.

I really don't think there is just one most important discovery man has made because they all go hand and hand.

It sure makes a person think though!!

What's your idea??

When you discover this, Grasshopper, You will have discovered inner peace.

Seriously though,

Beer's gotta rate pretty high up there.

I think I agree with Dave2, beer, you have to have lubrication for all the grinding of the gears that occur while trying to "think" up other stuff.

A Higher Power......

Man is just not capable of greater things without a belief in either reward of punishment. For example, take the nnalert..........

I live dangerously close to a Monestary where the Monks brew beer. They've been practicing since 1731. I've been monitoring their progress religiously about 4 times a year for the last 19 years and they're coming right along.

Reminds me of the story of the Greek and the Italian discussing who's civilation had contributed more to society. The Greek said we invented modern mathmatics. The Italian said we created the modern judicial system. The Greek said we built the Acropolis. The Italian said we built the Coloseum. The Greek started getting a little frustrated and said yea, well we invented s*x. The Italian said yes,but we introduced it to women.

I think one of the greatest discoveries is that no matter how much money we make/don't make ,how big our truck/tractor/farm/house ect. ect. is,in the end we all get the same 6' (actually 4' 6" in most areas) so we may as well stop and smell the roses of life, cause when it's over,it's too damn late.

I'll vote for Einstein E=mc2. Einstein's thinking & contributions were just plain awesome- huge benefit to man, but also destructive with a capital D.
I can't top rrlund's story. Coffee.

The discovery of fire allowed the settling of colder regions of the planet. It allowed food to be cooked, killing bacteria and organisms that might kill us. Fire also allows metals to be both refined [gold, as referred to in biblical times] and cast. And without the burning of fuels, none of our engines, gas or diesel, would run...so understanding that the discover of fire begat the discovery of explosions, then the discovery of fire can be credited also with leading to fireworks, firearms, and more heavy-duty excavation and mining [with dynamite] than was previously possible, as well.

But that's just MY opinion.

Close to where I live a group of mennonites farm .They do not use electricity, engines or navigational devises. They do use horsepower, human energy, and fire. They also use the principals of the wheel, gear, and lever.I guess you would have to say fire was the most important.

To name a few......
Agriculture so populations could take the time to develope science & literature instead of always roaming while looking for food.
Fire and the wheel of course.
Medicine & science to treat injuries & disease.
Birth control so we don"t overpopulate like rats. With 12 children all you are going to work for and have no time for anything else than food, clothes and housing. No extras.

Agriculture...It removed the need to spend all day hunting and gathering for food....cities could be formed and time could be spent gaining knowledge....knowledge then leads to technology and discoveries (like magnetism, metal working, wheel)

I remember reading that Einstien said that the greatest invention ever was compund interest. Right now coffee sounds good....

Actually, the bikini might've been what Einstein was referring to. After all, it keeps interest rates up, while not completely exposing the principal.

As much as I despise the stuff---plastics, which includes the vinyls family, fabrics, etc.

From plane canopies of old to medical supply containers, tubing, etc. to whatever.

I do agree that electricity via magnetism is king.

I have been reading Empires of Light and the early days of electricity were pretty rocky to say the very least. I had never known just how prominent George Westinghouse was in the field. I will be getting a biography of him to read tomorrow when I go to the library.
Empires of Light book.

You know where I work and you probably see the same, if not worse, downtown.

On some days we are only one clown short of being considered a circus.

I'm suprised no one mentioned guns, In 1492 our family trees would have ended otherwise.

The second best would of course be ladies under garments as I have heard this since I was a child so it must be accurate. Like they say ladies undergarments arn't the best things in the world... just next to it! Soo..I'm assuming that would indeed make it second.

I'd have to say the best discovery ever made by MAN, was a WOMAN, EVE. Nothing better in the wolrd than a good woman. After her I would say Bacon.

I can't believe I haven't seen the wheel mentioned.

Without it ag equipment wouldn't move an inch nor would a plane with it's plastic canopy be able to head down the runway.

Bacon would sit in the warehouse, your woman wouldn't be able to drive to the mall.

And most importantly, how would that wheelbarrow full of beer get to my house without one?

Might just be the camel...because if you don't ride a camel, you ain't shiite! Taken from David letterman. Dave
