I was working on a mower/condit the other day in the shed, started thinking about the hours on my tractor..6500 hours. How would that equal to miles..over the years. I figured if you took a mid range of 45 miles an hour that would equal about 6500 hours to 300,000 miles. Has anyone done the math to figure this out the right way??
 
A man argued with me one time. A garden tractor with 500 hrs on engine { approximately] I figured it would have been driven to Florida from Pitts.

His argument was most of the time it put those hours on was a loaded working hours causing more ware and tear on the tractor and would be equal too a higher mileage.

Friend of mine owns garbage collection business, started having a lot of trouble out of his newer truck, took it back to the dealer, they said it needed new injectors, (electronic not under warrenty). He said but the truck has only 50,000 miles, so the company send in a factory rep. Rep told him - oh if its a garbage truck -due to the starting and stopping-packing and unloading we figure the milage 3 times what is on the speedometer, so as far as we are concerned your truck has 150,000 miles.
 
I think I would argue that on a basis that garbage trucks don't get used at road rpms. Most of the time, and their engine life would be higher than a road engine if taken care of. and the transmissions would have almost new higher gears that is hardly used. the rpm is not to be over 1500 to use hydraulics if used right. vs. 2100-2600 running down the road.
 
I checked the hour meter on my Cummins against the miles on my Ram, and it worked out to an average up just under 50 miles per hour of run time, which is pretty high, but I was doin' a lot of highway miles at the time. In a discussion about that, most folks reported numbers more in the high 20s, low 30s in normal mixked driving, if that gives you any sense. Call it 30 and that puts you at 195k.

But that kind of exposes the problem with comparing hours to miles. Booth good things to know, but neither one is definitive for what kind of weatr ther's been on the motor. There is somewhere some optimum between high hours and lots of work. I'd rather have my Cummins than one that had spent so much time idling that it worked out to an average of ten miles per running hour.
 
It think those that have tried to make the comparison figure more like 30 mph average so 6500 hours is around 200K miles. Because of the different conditions for each use, its hard to compare directly. And your tractor hour meter is only true hours at one engine speed, they add up faster when the engine is running at top speed and slower when the engine is running at fast idle. But as an indication of time for service those errors balance out, because if its run hard it needs service sooner than if run gently. Same thing about car or truck miles. But going strictly on miles doesn't show how hard either worked in that time. But its close enough on the average to set oil change and repair intervals.

Really a hard thing to compare, engine hours are at rated RPM only. 1 hour clock time running at rated equals 1 hour on hour meter, higher RPM =higher hours, lower= lower. Then gear selection matters,my old Case runs at 4.5 MPH in working gear and about 18 MPH in Highest gear, but both would only show 1 hour on the meter; at the same RPM my car goes 62 MPH. Interesting question but not sure there is a definitive answer.
 
I just did a inspection a tow truck for one of my customers. The mileage was 95635 and the hours where 4876.on a 2005 truck.

Went out and checked my Sterling dump truck 53,000 miles 1482 hours of run time. When i got my Ford lta 9000 it had like 470,000 miles and showed just over 10,000 hours.
 
Diesel engines last the longest at a constant speed and load.

Short trips, idling, cold starts, etc. will wear out an engine faster.
 
All depends on what the truck is used for. My tool delivery truck has 128,000 miles on it, but has 14,000 hours. Don't drive it a lot of miles, but rarely shut it off all day.
