John Deere B radiator filler neck

The radiator neck on my tractor is rusted out. I see a replacement filler neck available at several different tractor parts dealers. YT # 4419R or John Deere P/n AB1607R. How difficult is it to replace this filler Neck? Can a novice like me do it and what tools do I need?

They are soldered on. You will need to take a torch and heat the old solder until it comes out. Then burnish all the old solder out of the casting, install new filler, and solder it right on in with lead/tin solder. Might have to use a flare torch tip.

Those have a cast iron top radiator tank and they are NOT soldered on. They are just driven in or on depending on what year B it is. The old ones can be peeled out, area cleaned up and the new one put on using some sealer.

Thanks Rob. I have a welding torch as well as a propane soldering torch. Can I do this while the radiator is on the tractor and water in it? I know I must remove the nose cowling/cap to get to it.

Rob is right , but its too much work. After you get the old one peeled away and the old solder cleaned off , coat the soldered area with any color RTV sealer , press the neck into position , and wipe off the excess. and you are good to go !! You would be there all day trying to heat that cast iron tank hot enough to solder on ........

Check it out. As all Waterloo built 2 cyls. had cast iron radiator top and bottom tanks and side supports. And the filler necks ARE DRIVEN IN not soldered ! Some of them are kinda hard to get driven in. The late model B has one that drives over the outer edge and is easier to change.

Replaced these on A,B,D,&H tractors.Never found one soldered on. Al I have ever done is peel out the old on and drive in the new. I have never used any sealer and never had any leaks. There is practically no pressure on them, especially with the old thermosyphon cooling systems.

I believe you can do it. No gas tank near you please. Make sure antifreeze is out of the working way.

You should be fine. Just experiment with the OLD ONE FIRST ON A BENCH and practice soldering on it, because the metal IS THIN and DOES LIKE to curl as you solder.
