really dumb

While in high school I bought a Model A Ford coupe in running condition, and played with it until it got hot and cracked the head.Wound up junking it .Would be worth more than I payed,30 dollars.Wasreally dumb, anybody out there ever look back and say ,boy was that really dumb????

Sure, I think it happens to everyone. When I was young and broke, I was offered a really nice 1951 Ford two-door with a V8 and automatic, for free. I couln't afford to store or license or insure it, but if I had storage available it would have been great.

More than I like to think about.............

Highlight would be the first phone call to the beast I ended up marrying the 1st time around.

Yep...in 75 during the last big gas crisis I sold a 68 Firebird convertible ( red/white top/ white seats) 4 speed for $800 . Bought a 69 VW bug for about the same money.
The 'bird is probably worth 40 grand now...

WHen i was a lil bitty, my dad sold a Austin Healey 100-4 Lemans (aluminum body work, short windsheild) to a buddy so he could by a Ramber American station wagon for mom. Wanna guess what that Healey is worth now?

Every tractor I've ever sold. There was a point that I said I was going to collect them and would never sell another one. That was about 10 sold tractors ago.

My first car too though. A 63 Chevy Impala SS 2 door hard top. Bucket seats, console automatic. I think I gave the neighbor $100 for it with no motor. Put a 283 back in it. Traded it for a Honda 160 motorcycle. Traded the bike for a John Deere H. Even sold the H too cheap. I think I let it go for $300. Course back then that was a good price for that.

1954 FL Farley- tankshift, chrome gas tank. 1937 UL project- trade for work car before completion after being out of work couple months. 49 FLE in 59 frame chopper. RN

Had a 1970 Road Runner about 25 years ago. Had been changed over to a 440 police interceptor and automatic. Body was a little rough. Got mad at it and traded it for an old Suzuki 125 dirt bike and $100.00. Wish I had it back.

Yeah. I sold a 1957 Chevrolet convertible in 1974 for $400. (With a freshly rebuilt 283.) Probably worth $70-80,000 now.

The thing about these "regret lists" is that it probably would have cost me $100,000 in the last 35 years in storage, maintenance, insurance, and upkeep. So would I have really been any further ahead if I had kept it?

Others include a 1957 Chevy hardtop, 1968 Camaro RS, 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1965 Corvair Spyder Convertible, 1984 Corvette, and a 1970 International 1456 Gold Demonstrator.

Enjoy 'em while you can . . . nothing lasts forever.

TRADED A 67 SS CHEVELLE FOR A 70 ELIMINATOR 302 BOSS COUGAR MOTOR WENT INTO A DIRT TRACK CAR. 67 FORD FAIRLANE GTA BLACK SOLD 1200 GREEN ONE SOLD FOR 350 . BUT I STILL HAVE A 67 CAMARO 427 4 SPEED IN BUTTERNUT YELLOW .

Traded a running CASE model C to an auto body
guy who would refinish my 51 WILLYS pickup.
3 years later had to go get the truck back,
because he handn"t done a thing to it. Of course
he was broke, out of work,(but too lazy to work
on the truck), but was going to butcher 2 pigs,
and would give me one, for the tractor.
Sure wish that I had the tractor! Still have the
truck

Oh boy have a few, haven't we all.. 57 chevy convert sold for $50.00, 56 Pontac convert traded for 57 ford waggon, Pontiac had bad trans Ford was running. 49 Caddy convert traded for a 49 Ford.. 59 Pontac with 421, B&M hydro, my hot rod traded for Mustang 6 cyl when I found out the wife was expecting. Traded the Mustang in on a 67 fastback with a 390 after the kid was paid off.. 76 Vett and an 84 Vett.

Last 49 Caddy convert I saw for sale was like 50,000.00.. The one I would love to have back is the 59 Pontac but the 390 Mustang and the 84 Vett were fun cars.

Now I drive a Dodge Caravan and will probably buy another one.. Bet many don't know you can get a full 4 x 8 sheet of plywood in the back of a Caravan..

If you peruse a copy of Hemmings Motor News, you will find many old cars, kept in nearly perfect condition for sale by folks who thought they were gonna cash in, only to find that they instead have a low mileage used car worth only what some one is willing to pay for it. In the meantime its a burden to store, insure, and maintain. gh

My first car was my grandfather's 78 olds delta 88 with a 403 4bbl,next was an 89 Z24 with a 2.8L and a 5 speed,wait a minute,they're both still worthless lol.My dad had some nice cars though,he had 2 57 Chev's,only 4 dr posters with I-6's,had a really nice 62 Chev SS,only had a 6 in it as well,a 63 Pontiac Parisenne,it had a 350 hp 327 with a 3 on the wheel,was a 4 dr,than a 65 Pontiac,than a 67,than a 69.When he lived in Toronto in the early 60's,he had a hot rod type car.Had a 327 fuelie,4 speed and electric dump exhaust,it was in a ford of all things too lol.He used to race thing on Younge street with the dumps open lol.

This afternoon I cut down a decent sized black walnut which was too close to a shop building. It was leaning toward the building and so I trimmed off a number of branches on that side and put a chain and come-along on the other side to pull it into falling that direction. As I was making the back cut on it, I was thinking...is this really going to fall in the right direction? Well it did and all was well.

But many times I have done really stupid things. For example, buying an old car without checking it out thoroughly. I wanted to do an oil change right away so I drove it up on the ramps. Then I noticed something wrong. The right side upper ball joint had popped loose. Now that was fun.

Or the time we went to look at a house to rent and as I backed away from the house, I didn't wait for the car to stop going backward before throwing it into gear. Blew the CV joint completely out. Now that was a fun repair, Saturday afternoon and two hours away from home.

Or changing the thermostat in my pickup and cracking the aluminum housing...for the second time in two years....

At age 16, I let a low-mileage 1950 Mercury get away because the clutch throw-out bearing was going bad......

Buying a Chrysler product and trying to reverse 200,000 miles of hard driving.

Those two ideas are NOT very bright.

I've got to say I did some dum things with cars also. I junked my 48 Chrysler New Yorker with a straight 8, Junked my 53 Studebaker, Left my brothers 35 ford at the other farm my dad and his brothers sold, it got pushed into a ditch and was burried by the new owners. Sold my 35 chevy for a give away price. Could have bought a Lincoln zepher V 12 for a song. Sold my MG for 250.00 Then that was a long time ago. stan

Back in the '60s my father brought home a non-descript looking sword he bought for $25 from a guy cleaning out his hardware store basement.

Unimpressed, I used it for years as a poker in my wood stove.

2 years ago, at my wife's suggestion I researched it on the internet and verified it's a rare Venetian military sword from the late 1500s-early 1600s !!

The shaft is bent a little but still intact. Jed Clampett has nothing on me.

just remember a lot them cars would be rotted into dust, had a 69 chevell in 72, never forget the rust holes inthe the lower frt. fenders

Well, maybe, sorta...

Went to a company picnic when I was 16 years old. Met up with a cute, cute girl who thought I was heaven-sent. Her favorite hobbies were flyrod fishing with her dad, hunting, and helping her dad with the farmwork. Her dad owned a nice farm to go with all of that. I turned her down for a city girl. Who knows......(certainly not youth!)

Real dumb

A '64 1/2 Ford Mustang. I bought it new one week before they were to be displayed for the first time. I had to allow the dealer to display it for a few weeks before I could take ownership, as he only had two to show.

I sold it ten years later for $700, mainly because it needed upper ball joints, and I didn't have to money to spare. Real dumb.

I didn't take notes when I was 18 and the smartest man on earth. Sure wish I had some notes to look back on to refresh my memory.

Guess who used to buy one car after another and fix everything on them just to see what was really wrong? Get bored and get another one. Do it all over again. Just broke even all the time. Good part was most cars went to somebody that really needed them. Got a little smarter, bout car number 35 or so.

I had one of those too . 289 , 4 on the floor ,4 bbl , red paint black interier, convertable. I traded it for a 67 chrysler 300 before I killed myself with it.

Still got mine, Saab Sonett II 1969 with lifetime warranty.

PS going to take to my grave with me. I figure in 1000 or 2000 year when someone finds my mausoleum and digs it up they will have the only one in existence.

Came home on leave in 1969 and bought a 69 Dodge Super Bee. Traded it off in 72 or 73 for a piece of junk. Also practically gave away my 55 Chevy and a 57 Chevy pickup.

Lots of cars sold for next to nothing, like everyone else, but I remember when in high school, went to church one Sunday and there was a beautiful '50 Ford coupe, black paint you could comb your hair in. Owned by a little white haired lady- I wanted to ask her if it was for sale, but figured she probably got asked that all the time, and if she wanted to sell, would have done so by now. Naturally, she sold it, for $125, about a week later to a knothead in the class behind me. He, of course, totalled it within the month. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Went to an auction this spring where there was a 64 1/2 Mustang for sale. It brought $4000. That's 4 thousand. Completely there, not bent or badly rusted. Good project car!
