Hello, I have a 1963 Fordson Super Dexta, there is a small lever in the side of the back end just beside your right leg. on my tractor when i got it thsi lever was held in the down position by a piece of wood. the lever appears to do nothing, as when i remove the wood or leave it there there is no difference to the tractor and its operation. Can anyone tell me what this lever is and what it is supposed to do.

Thanks,
Niall

just a guess but if the fordson is like the ford, and that lever is about 3 inches long, its the draft/position control for the 3 point, see if one way makes the 3 point hold anywhere and the other makes it go either all the way up or all the way down,

Wouldn't that information be in the owners manual?? You do have an owners manual for a tractor you know nothing about, don't you??

My owner's manual is silent on the subject of sticks of wood holding levers down. You must have a different version.

As others have said it is the draft/position control lever. Down is draft, use when using turning plow, cultivator or other equipment that you want to control depth or load on tractor. With the lever forward the system is in position mode. Lift arms will move in relation to control lever movement. Use with mowers, blade, anything that you want to stay at a certain place. If it doesn"t work this way there"s problems with adjustments or worn parts inside lift cover. Position control has a pin that rides on a cam on rockshalf, pin wears off and no more position control. Shop manual would help.

Assuming this is like a Ford & this is the postion/ draft lever: You really don't want it in 'draft' mode for normal use, as that can produce unexpected results.

Tractors don't come with wood holding things in place, so we have to assume soething is not quite right/ Not sure of the reson for needing it held in whatever position it is in, but you probably want to end up with the 3pt working normally in 'position' mode whenever you get it figured out. 'Draft' mode is only really useful for a mounted 3pt plow on the back, where it can sense how hard a heavy load is pulling on your tractor & adjust the arms up or down to keep a constant load on the machine. Saves on clutching & straining the engine. All other times _you_ want control of how high the 3pt is, and you want it in position mode.

But, Forson may be different, and thi is some other lever than what we are thinking?

Seen way to many uninformed people get into serious trouble by fooling with things they don't understand, when the answer was in an owners manual. The manual is the FIRST thing that should be acquired with any purchase, then there are no questions about what oil to use or where to put said oil. Seems foolish to me to spend several thousand on a tractor and SAVE $25 on a manual and rely on free advice from someone who may not know,i.e.;differential lock/draftcontrol/pto guesses on this post.

My first thought was a differential lock also due to its location. But he wouldn't be able to steer it very well and he says he couldn't tell any difference in the operation so I ruled the diff-lock out. Good thought though!

Yeah, I can see your point. Maybe its just the way you said it. If a guy has never been around a tractor before, he probably needs more help than just an owners manual. If he's got lots of experience with tractors, he probably won't get in too much trouble without a manual. I have manuals for some of my tractors, some I don't.
