Getting ready to go and check out the early JD 40 I might be buying, going to pull spark plugs and see what they look like, need to know what size socket they take, save taking several different sizes with me. Thanks Don c

JD 40 is supposed to take a 13/16" hex spark plug with 14mm threads that are 7/16" reach. Champion H10 or equivalent.

FYI, I recently checked the compression on our '54 40U, 125 psi on each cylinder.................Autolite 216 is another option for plug choice..................

Take a compression tester with you. You may not be able to tell much by just looking at the plugs especially if they replaced them recently in hopes of selling the tractor. While you got the plugs out check the spark also.
