I"ve got a 21 M H tractor with a cont. 4 cyc. eng. It has running problems after years of service. It will start up and maybe die instantly or maybe run for 15 or 20 min. I took the carb apart and cleaned it. It gets enough gas but dies just like you turn the key off. I checked the coil and it dosent even get warm. Most coil problems seem to make the coil get so hot they will burn your fingers.I got it to run for 4 or 5 min. and pulled the dist cap and the condenser was also cold. Checked the wireing and it seems to be ok at any places that it hookes up to the tractor and where it goes through hold down clips.I am going to switch coils with another 6 v coil tomorrow. Does anyone else have any other thoughts on this matter? Thanks Sam

I don't think the condensor would be hot if it was bad. It would just die instantly after the tractor started.

It dosent die instantly all the time. the dieing is spratic. It dosent seem to have a set pattern. Thanks for the reply. Sam

Have you checked al the wire terminals for corrosion and looseness try connecting the wires from the switch together without the switch and see if it runs ok. On our H the switch went bad after 50 or so years for the ignition just an on/off switch.

First thing when it dies you have to find out if its gas or spark. Use a spare plug clamped to ground then when it dies pull any wire and hook it to the spare plug no fire then its a spark problem. When it dies just remove the drain plug in the carb. No gas then thats the problem.
