NO SMOKING HERE

Stopped a Iowa rest area the other day to use the restroom of course and saw a sign saying no smoking on this property, if you wanted to smoke you would have to smoke in the enclosed vechile, or the confinment of your vechile. wow. No smoking outside in the breeze, MINORITY IN CONTROL.

I think the reason they have those signs is because they were getting so many complaints from John Q. Public.

The butts in the urinals are soggy and hard to light. :>)

So..........was that decision made by a career bureaucrat or...........I'll bet it came out of your state legislature. Have you called your state senator/representative and expressed your displeasure?

Dear Hi. did I say or put in to print that I smoked...quick replys do not have any thought or reasoning behind the answer. Some people are air heads plan and simple..

I feel bad for smokers in regard to what they lace the cigs. with It used to be in a restaurant the smokers would get the nice window seats and non smokers would get stuffed in a corner no windows. My pet peeve is when I see smokers throw their cigs. out the window of the cars and it flys at your vehicle,my thought is if you smoke`m you keep them in your ash tray until you can find proper disposal.

john d you dont get the point either. The minority approve of abortion, so it is law. The guy that smokes is not blowing the smoke in the face of a traveler stopping to take a leak. It is free air out there. the point is,that freedom is leaking away from us, more and more and more.

I think I "get" the conflict between smokers and non-smokers. How you manage to link a smoking ban to abortion is what I don't get.

If you feel you're losing freedoms, then run for office yourself, or support those who believe as you do, and see if they win.

I agree with you that it's "free air" out there, but I prefer not to have my free air smelling like someone's cigarette smoke. Some people feel they have a "right" to smoke. More and more people feel that the "right" to smoke shouldn't interfere with the ability of everyone else to breathe clean air. If people smoke anywhere and anytime they want to, then other's freedoms are being usurped.

The rest areas are state owned public areas- treated the same as a government office lobby, no smoking allowed there either. The no smoking laws may vary between states but the 'property owner'-state- is consistent in it's application of the law regarding 'public areas'. If you're working the rest area and it has a restricted, lockable room for employees only the room may by agreement with employed nicotine addicts be used for their smoking- happens at some schools, the basement maintenance room with special ventalation is available to employees-teachers, administration- only so they are not seen in public getting their nicotine fix. You are lucky they allowed you to smoke in the confinement of your own vehicle since this was on government property.

While I have only heard rumors; it has been said that the Desert Hills (Banning) scales in Calif. was ticketing drivers for smoking in their own truck as they crossed the scale. You can not smoke within 50 ft of a government building in Calif. and the truck scale is within that distance from the scale building.

Our little one horse town here recently became "progressive" and passed a non smoking ordinance. There was lots of debate around town about the dangers of second hand smoke (which I don't dispute) If you listened to the people supporting the ban you'd think that second hand smoke was nearly as dangerous as nuclear fallout. Funny thing is, in the early spring and the temperature gets a little nice to where everyone in town can get out and clean up, what's the first thing they do? why rake up a bunch of leaves and burn them. Whole place covered in a veil of smoke and nobody says a word. People are funny.

Don't understand why any restaurant has a smoking area or why children are allowed in them.

If the rumors are true, they only reinforce my contention that the primary function of state DOT officers is revenue enhancement. Any contribution to highway safety is purely ancillary.

I can see the irony in Burtys point about smoking and abortion, the same people who are gung ho baby killers expect goverment to make sure no harm comes to themselves and are the first to cry when inconvienced in any way. Smokers should refrain anywhere the practice is not welcome. I would like to see a whole lot less legislation both locally and nationally,in general,it is very tempting for people in power to dictate to others how to live, what to say etc.

2nd best thing I ever did in my life was on Aug 11,1985 was looking at a Mentholated Newport Cigarette prior to lighting it up and proceeded to throw it away and have never touched another one to this day.Indeed I missed them for a long time but not any more.In fact Cigarette Smoke is very offensive to me now, however Smoke from burning Oak and Red Maple Leaves are very enjoyable along with Smoke Smell from a Home Heater burning Hickory or Smoke from a Country Smoke House curing Hams and Bacon such as one I know of in Kentucky. So Smoke is Smoke except when it comes from Tobacco or Hemp I guess.JC

It used to be ok to dump chemicals and sewage into waterways and send it to the ocean. I believe the reasoning was the ocean was so big it could take the polution and dilute it to the point where it was harmless. Now I would like to compare the air we all breathe to the ocean and the pollution put into the air by smokers and other types of polution. Now some would say what harm is a cigarette going to do. I perfere to think of it as a company like phillip morris or any other cig co as burning x amount of tractor trailer loads of cigarettes and polluting our air that we breathe.

Here in ohio they passed a no smoking law that says no smoking in any bar or public place, not even in the parking lot of a bar or restaurant, not even in your own car on public property. It also covers people traveling through the state on interstate highways.Don't know how there going to inforce it yet.

The problem is smokers are often messy, dropping ash everywhere, throwing butts all over the ground, hence no smoking...thus eliminating the mess.

If anyone disputes this then explain why in any outdoor area that smoking is allowed you see butts laying everywhere.

The DOT man that set up my grandson for his cattle trucks told him it started out as safety but now is all about revenue.

What kills me is fat people. You go on a plane or to a public area and there they are. Taking up more than their share of space , huffing like a pig and breating more than their share of that precious clean air. Not my fault they eat anything they can reach. I say no smoking at the rest stop and noone who is not height-weight proportionate. People bring babies in there too and change them and leave stinky dirty diapers that can not be flushed. You gonna have a dirty diaper - keep it in your smoke free car. I don't wanna smell it in the public restroom . No smoking , No whales and no babies. Anyone else got any other reasobnable restrictions we need to impose at this time?

There is a DOT regulation prohibiting smoaking within 25 ft of a haz-mat load. I don't think the driver's area is 25ft from the cargo area.

SMOKERS ARE THE MINORITY..and slowly but surely being eliminated from the gene pool. a filthy habit and a huge waste of productivity. Look around any business at the filth generated outside by the employed smokers (as mentioned by a previous poster) and the wasted time and payroll generated by their numerous and almost always off-the-clock smoking breaks. God's curse on America for employing slave labor.

Reminds me of when they passed the no spitting laws Darn nasty habit Spitting tobacco all over the sidewalks.
Walt

PS you pot smokers are next.

I agree that cigarette smoking reeks. But pipe tobacco does have a good odor but is probably just as dangerous. But I do occasionally enjoy a good cigar, outside of course. As a matter of fact I have the original box of cigars from when my son was born on Jan 15, 1987. I light one up in celebration every year on his birthday. It's still a free country that we can enjoy as long as we also respect other's rights.

I remember when they banned smoking in the train stations in
Tokyo (except for limited areas). It wasn't for health concerns, it
was the cost of cleaning up after the smokers. Figure 2,000,000
commuters a day at 30% smokers, each one drops 1 butt on the
platform, thats 600,000 butts to be cleaned up in one station.

Thats fine with me.Never have smoked and never will.My wife is highly allergic to cigarette smoke so we have to stay away from it.

Burty - I get your point and I agree, although I am not a smoker. I simply cannot stand the anti-smoking nazis who have so successfully taken the rights away from all of us. Yes - all of us, even though I am not a smoker. If I wanted to be a smoker my rights would be limited, therefore the loss of freedom affects me too.

Maybe now that we have the cool mooslim smoker president these laws will be removed. After all, if it's good enough for the messiah it should be good enough for the rest of us.

Have to laugh. This past summer we had a family picnic and a usually outgoing and devilish 6 year old nephew seemed to be going out of his way to avoid me. I finally asked him what was up.
"Mommy says your a bad man". So I asked him why she would say something like that. He replyed "because you smoke". Well I"ve never smoked in his presence and also never cared much for SIL, but I suppose after 29 years I still don"t much care for her.
I informed the wife that I want to know when she will be stopping by, so I can be stepping out. Wouldn"t want to have the "educated" side of the family offended by a "bad man".
MIL is still trying to smooth that gaffe over.

Smoking is proven to be bad for everyones health and many people have become sick and died from smoking, even if they were non smokers. They are getting so strict up here that they have banned smoking in bingo halls all together. They had a seperate section for smokers but then put a total ban on smoking. The closed off section they used to have for smokers was worse than a forest fire. They've also made restaurants totally smoke free and smokers have to go quite aways away from the entrance to smoke outside. That's a good thing. I hate going into or leaving a place and all the smokers are right outside the door blowing smoke in everybody's face. If I want smoke I'll just go weld something. There is even talk about not allowing parents to smoke with their kids in the car with them. And still more extreme is talk of not allowing people to smoke in their own house if there are any kids. I can't understand why a lot of the younger crowd still think it's cool to start smoking. At $10 a pack, it adds up pretty fast. Dave

The non smokers got a fifteen minute break but the smokers could step out anytime for a smoke break.
