how to grade tread depth

I've seen ads where the tires are said to be "90%", but they looked pretty worn down. Is this a personal judgement, or is there some sort of template to measure tires?
thanks
Jay

Not supposed to be personal judgement, but you never know. A new tire has (say 8) mm tread so, 50% would be 4mm, 75% 6mm, etc.

I think it is sellers judgement most times, there is a tire tread depth gauge tool that you could accurately measure remaining tread and if you knew new tire tread depth you could come up with a real %.

Same theory runs rampant in tracked equip. undercarriage rating, I've looked at 90% undercarriage machines and well 90% of it was there it was only missing 1 sprocket.

There aboslutely is a "template" provided by the tire manufacturer and can be measured using a tread depth gauge................

Next time ask the seller for the actual measurements and the make/size of the tire if you really want to "cut to the chase"...................

Tread depth is measured in x/32 of an inch. New tire specs are available from the tire manufacturers website... generally. From that you can calculate the % remaining.
Probably less than you're being led to beleive...

Road tires are to be replaced when the tread wear indicator bars are showing smooth (in any location that they cross) this indicator bar depth is functionally a part of the total depth, but must be used to determine when to replace the tire. Thus measure from tread surface to the top of the indicator bar on five bars, at the ends of the bars, and two places in the middle. If you have them in hand it can be done. If relying on the seller, it won't be done the way you would. JimN

I never buy used tires, take em free, though. Tires can look very good and be unable to balance. Have hard spots. Out of round. these are usually the ones for sale used. Careful shoppin g can get you new ones, sometimes cheaper than used. I don't pay for warranty or mounting or balancing or stems or anything but the rubber.

the trem is used most of the time wrong, a tirewith 90% tread should have 90% of the original tread depth remaing, the problem is does the seller really know what the original tread depth was? for used tractors put your tounge in cheek and assume if he says 75% tread he means the traction lugs are visible all the way across the tire, if he says he has 50% tread assume the outer edges of the lugs are visable the center is smooth, not mentioning the tractor has been sitting on them in the same spot outside for 20+ years and the sidewalls are cracked

Jason when buying used tires at 90% tread depth, find out what the seller conciders 90%. A tire is concidered worn out when the tread gets down to 2/32. The last 2/32 is never counted when adjusting a tire. I always thought this was wrong, but all tire MFGS use this. Get yourself a tread depth gauge and use it. They are cheep. Go on the net to the MFG and find out the original T D.

They probably use that spec because 2/32 is the DOT wear limit. When it hits 2/32 it's done. That's on a drive tire. A steer tire is 4/32...
