Sluge Solvent

I have a sludge in my tran. case. Is there a good solvent out there? It is the 1/8" to 1/4" thick remains of the GL-1 oil that had sat for 50 years.
Anybody got any thing they know works?

Mechanical removal is not an option as it is under the transmission gears and I cannot get in there.

I would put some diesel in and drive it around then drain. Mite need to do that a couple of times ive done that on the Bs and As works fine.

IH2444 - are you sure about ATF being a high detergent oil? Don't think you will find any ATF or hydraulic oil that is a high detergent oil. Anti-wear, anti-foam, and anti-others - Yes, but detergent - No. bob f.

DEXRON is high detergent, I used to use it to wash massive grease off of myself before using the gojo.

ATF not UTF.

This tractor is being split.

The steering gear came off last night. And someone had put ATF fluid in it. Not sure what type though.

I pulled the drain plug and had to poke though the sluge to get the fluid out.

Gears are in great shape. Every thing seems to turn.

Just while it is apart want to clean it up.

acetone will get it out. put it on and mop around on the gears, just agitate what you can.
It will break it up and make it shine.
I just did a gummed up gas tank with it and it got all of it out

I Too..after taking out the plug. had to poke a hole through the Sludge to get the Gunky Oil/Condensation out of My JD H and Kerosene Does an excellent Job at this!Larry KF4LKU

IH2444 - Washing your hands can be accomplished by using any petroleum fluid/semi-fluid. Crude oil or gun grease will cut grease off your hands. ATF's do not have significant levels of detergent because the transmission is a sealed unit not subject to combustion by-products. Certain ATF's have slight amounts of dispersant (which CAN act as a detergent on a very limited basis) which is used to hold solid contaminants in suspension so they can be filtered out during circulation of the oil and not collect in the transmission case.

The fact that you can clean your hands with ATF has no bearing on how much detergent is in the oil.
