JOHN DEER 450 CRAWLER. how does a master track pin come off of a john deer 450 crawler. i have tried to pound it out with no luck. any IDEAS !!!??? greatly appreciated.

First?? have you the master pin?? It will eather have a deep counresunk hole in the center or the edge will be slightly machined into the center about 1/8". I have done many 350s and the m/pin is hard to find. You can drive any pin out but only the master has spacers and a shorter bushing to split the track. If you have'nt burred it over them put a block of wood in the sprocket and tension up the track tight, this will take the rebound out of the pin driver. Then pound like hel;l, BUT if you have burred the pin over you have to grind all the burr off.

one BIG hammer and steel shaft about 1 foot long and a guy with some blacksmith tongs to hold the shaft and a good guy that can hit the shaft and hit like hejj they do not come out very easy 99% of the time i torch them out it's a lot safer

Like others have said, make sure you have the master pin. I find it helpful to place a heavy piece of metal behind the track rail with the master pin to back up the hammer blow. On my tractors the master pin is welded in a few spots. Stan

I haven't messed with the john deeres, but the some of the cat pins have to be pressed out. We have a special pin press to press them out.

Use a torch to heat the metal around the pin it will drive right out. When putting it back in heat it up again drive pin in and the quench with cold water it tighten right up. Did this many times on D-7 cats.

they are correct about having to drive the pin the out, but in the one reply about puttin it back together, i think he is tryin to tell you how to do but it is worded quesionably, you want to heat the link up not the pin, you want to put the pin in the freezer an get it cold. when i did my 40C i didnt get have to heat up the links, went i put back together, i did when it came apart, becareful if you apply to heat to them, but anyhow after i got the main pin ice cold, i put in little bit smaller bolt with the head cut off got the track linked back together an an then drove the pin in, pushing out the bolt as it went in. i did it with a ballpin hammer. remember the pin is ice cold, you dont want to waste any time cause remember as the pin gets warmer it get tighter.
just me 2 cents worth

If it's still original, the master pin has a head on it and is held in by a snap ring. When tension is taken off the track, it will drive out easy.
If it's been replaced, or it's a newer crawler, e.g. 450B, 450C, etc. - the masterpin has no head - just a little dimple mark in the center. It fits very tight and the link needs to be heated. Then either pushed out with a hydraulic pin driver - or with a large punch and hammer.

I took a piece of 1" round barstock about 5' long, cut 16" from it..Welded the cut-off like a long snouted pin hammer..I block the head of the pin hammer level with the master pin and give it a swat with my LARGE sledgehammer..I stabilize the pin hammer with my foot on the long part of the handle as I swing.....As a last resort , use heat....Lots of heat...
