ULSD in a torpedo heater

I know diesel has been used in the past with varying results, but is the new fuel clean enough now to use regularily in a torpedo heater???

if you heater is in good working order it will burn clean dont let it run out thats when you get puffs of smoke ie change you filters air and fuel i rebuilt one last year runns just fine on desiel

Its not K-1 Kero like the others have said but it doesn't have the K-1 price either.

I use it in my garage in my torpedo heater with no problems yet. Diesel supposedly will plug your nozzle in the heater. It does have a little odor but much better than the old diesel.

In the past you could use #1 diesel but it was smoky. I tried #2 once and found it would not ignite. No plugging the nozzle, just fuel too heavy to ignite. I'll have to give the new ULSD fuel a try.

It's a matter of viscosity, being able to vaporize the fuel so it can burn.
Shorter/lighter chain hydrocarbons burn cleaner than the heavy fuels in otherwise identical conditions. Hence kerosene rather than #2 fuel oil.
Jet A-1 or Jet B is reasonable in price at the local airport. Kerosene at the hardware store is ob$cene.

(quoted from post at 22:40:18 11/15/08) k1 isn't much more then #2 diesel is it ?

$4.89/ gal vs. $2.85/gal . The pumps are 2 feet from each other. 500ppm in the K1 vs. 15ppm in the #2.

The 500ppm and 15ppm is the sulfur content. You can also but 500ppm LSD and 5000ppm HSD diesel but it can only be used in off road applications.

That is not the part you need to be worried about. You are consirned if it says #1 or #2.

If you can find #1 diesel that would be a lot closer to Kero and may work. Also like I said before if you can find some Jet A you can use that because it is the same thing as Kero.

The only reason I posted the sulphur content was that I thought maybe the smell from using #2 wouln't be as bad as in years past with the old formula fuel. So, assuming #2 will burn in my heater, is it going to smell more than K1 or not?

We run #2 diesel in them all the time have not had any problems it does not get smokey until you shut them off Kerosene is too high to run them like we do usually at least an hour a day
