OT Skunk story

Yesterday late afternoon I backed into my drivway and noticed a bunch of boys near the day care playground both young and elderly. A skunk had wondered inside the fence.

The local grocery man arrived at the same time as I did with a dog food bag and just a little dog food in it. He walked right up to the skunk, three to four foot away and shook the bag. The skunk followed him part way across the playground but was gaining speed so the guy droped the bag. He was hoping the skunk would enter the bag, and he could close it. That did not happen so he stood next to the sand pile and the skunk walked up close to him. As he did so the guy grabbed the skunks tail and lifted him off the ground. They took the skunk in the back of a open pickup to the country to drop him off.

Now I have seen alot of stupid guys make mistakes, but it sure worked for him. I never thought he was the sharpest tool in the shed, but I guess he has done this before. I'm not so sure his plan allows any hesitation while grabing, nor alows for changing your mind once you start to grab. It was a full grown skunk also.

some time ago in the colorado mountains I was under a new modular we put up. I felt a cold body part on the back of my neck. Knowing snakes(those with rattely things) were near aswell as skunks I carefully turned over to face a skunk face to face. It licked my face as I lay very still. Rembering the neighbor down the way had a descented skunk and knowing they were not known for being kind to animals SHOOTING BEARS with pistol along the road (he did 60 days for that one) answering ads of folks wanting a safe loving home for their potbellied pigs, next day having a small pig hanging in a tree, you get the picture. I carefully discussed the situation with the skunk as to if he was friendly. It curled up in my arms, as we carefully crawled out the crawspace. Outside it followed me for 2 hours untill I started toward the owners home. It went to my shop. I called and later they came up. The little fellow did not want to go and for the next years would excape often and run to my shop climb up my leg and set on the workbench for hours.

I;ve been told that some skunks spray and some don't, I've also heard that some skunks have one stripe and some have two,not sure what that means. All I know is every one I've come in contact with did spray and I've never seen one on the highway that didn't stink......Jim in N M

They have to be touching something with there back feet to spray. Used to grab them all the time and turn them loose in the middle of camping areas where the city folks would show up and ruin the weekend. Buddy had one once and was bragging how he'd swooped it up yadayada when another buddy tossed a stick at him, when he flinched, the skunks back legs hit his leg and that's all it took.

It's not just a matter of their feet touching something is it? They have to be able to get traction with their back feet to squeeze. That's why they can't spray in a live trap with a smooth steel bottom.

I used to drive a truck loading mail in the wee hours of the morning. The driver next to me had a skunk that rode in the truck with him. He said it was the ideal pet. It was active when he was. Slept days like he did. The only drawback was although the skunk had been descented, it still had to have frequent baths to not stink. Other than being a skunk, it was friendly much like a cat.

We had some around here, In central Texas, when I was a kid, that were black and white speckled. My dad called them cevit cats. I haven't seen one in several years. (Been a long time since I was a kid).

my step dad cought one in a leg trap once my grandfather told him to shoot him in the backbone and paralize it so it wouldnt spray(made sense to me)only problom he didnt say what gun to use my step dad used the 410 with scatter shot said he didnt want to miss well you can all figure where this is going skunk didnt spray but it still stunk

Oh goody, I get to pick up wild skunks by their tail. No thanks.

Can't they bend around and still bite?

Also if I wan't to shoot one, where do you shoot it with no spray? I've spared a couple cause I didn't want them spraying in the yard and then have to deal with the disposal.

I don't want them around because of rabies and possibly spraying the other animals.

Civets used to get our young chickens, but I haven't seen one for a long time either. I do know an animal called a civet is now extinct but I don't know if it's the same animal we're talking about. Jim

I found out the hard way that baby skunks are born with stink. A mother skunk was run over by my place and a couple of days later these tiny little babies were running around on the road. They actually were kind of cute, but I ran over one with the dirt bike anyway, and when I got home my pant leg was so strong I had to take my pants off outside and leave them hanging on the fence for a week before my wife would even think about washing them.
