I've been out on Canadian Navy vessels in the past, but never during a "crisis"...

Grandfather, however, is another matter.

William Peter Reid, RCNVR 1938-1945. HMCS Huron (G24) & HMCS Dunvegan (K177).

His father was in the first world war, though I'm unsure exactly how he was involved.

I've been after my grandfather for years to write down his stories...and the stories of his father and family, and at least have record of it, if not getting it published.

Re: Veteran status...

Technically, yes, I'm a veteran. But IMHO Veteran's DAY is in recognition of those folks that really and truly put their life on the line for us. In Country, in the mud, in the air or whatever, but with people shooting at them. THOSE guys and gals kept and are keeping us free. I was just a technician in a uniform.

I have never served so let me post this for my father and a few other of my kin.

CHITTY, Odie Clarence, Sgt.

Inducted into the Army June 8, 1942. Trained at Camp Wallace, Galveston and Tyler, TX and Camp Davis, NC. Assigned to anti-aircraft unit at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX. Served in South Pacific, Australia, Dutch, New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan; involved in Invasion of Biak Island. Awarded two Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal. Discharged December, 31, 1945 as first sergeant.

Tour of the Pacific as written by Odie Chitty: 227th AAA
Landed in Sydney Australia then to the to the Islands of New Guina, landing first at Millany Bay then to Port Morsbey and then to Good Enough Island then to Fintchauen then to Herlandia then to Biak Island then to the Philippines then to Japan and then back to San Francisco, California

Recalled for the Korean War 1st January 1949 and was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, as a communication officer. Discharged 6th April 1953 with the rank of Master Seargent.

Two uncles also served in World War II and one was injured building a landing strip on an Island. He spent the rest of his like in a wheel chair.

Grandfather served in W.W. I in the infantry. Great Uncle served as well and I remember him telling me about the horses.

Great Great Grandfather was in the Civil War with the Confederate forces of Tennessee and is listed in serving in the 48th regiment, Company I (Voorhie's) Tennessee Infantry as well as the 16th Regiment (Voorhie's) under the famous Captain Pat Cleburne. He named one of his sons Patrick Cleburne after the Captain.

Air Force 1990-1998

Spent some time serving the UN and NATO in Bosnia during that little skirmish.

Otherwise, I spent 4 years in Anchorage, AK, and 4 in Minot, ND. (I"ve seen my fill of snow for this lifetime, thank you very much!)

Dave we have something in common from that era, Our unit handled the supplies to build that air strip in 1965 it was probably cement by the time you used it. We supplied the [ PSP] Pierced steel planking, for the original. Then we moved on to Tuy Hoa, where the rest of my tour ended. We did in fact while in Phan Rang have three Air force men overlook the Items as they came in they lived in our compound until the base was set up, and the rest of their squadron came.

While in Tuy Hoa we came under fire on three different occasions as the VC was testing our strength, the last time I was involved there was 41 VC dead two American wounded. I heard it got worse after I came back. WE were in what the Army called a secure area.

While I was there a civilian company built a 5 mile stretch of runway that now probably is a major highway to the town of Tuy Hoa.

We had an ongoing joke of the birdmen as when they were bombing the mountain ranges around us. The married pilots would barely skim the top of the mountain before releasing their bombs , and the single guys would take them in and put them in the enemy's pocket. nerve racking as we thought several times they crashed.

Army, Aug 69-1971, University of NAM. I was a grunt in Big Red 1, RVN, then 360 tran after Big Red 1 came home. 360 tran was a line haul fuel outfit. Got to see lots of the the war torn country, it was beautiful, but never realized it then. Perhaps it had something to do with my att-- tee-- tude!

Any of you that wonder what it is like now? A classmate winters there every year. Says its better than the USA in most ways, he loves it there. I still have alot of ill feelings myself, and still today it brings me downward. I hope to get the chip off my shoulder someday before I die. It seems very heavy at times, and serves no usefull purpose.

I feel so very blessed to have been able to come home in one piece unlike so many less fortunate. Those are the ones I take my hat off for, especialy the ones who spent the rest of their lives wishing they were dead.

Also, for any vet not taking advantage of their VA hospital, please at least look into it, it has been nothing but wonderful for myself and many many others. Another blessing I count every day.
