Powerstroke Ring job

Okay, I recently bought a 97 Ford F-350 with a Powerstroke Turbo Diesel that has some miles on her. Getting wisps of blue smoke under power (climbing hills). So here goes the question,

How hard is it to bore/hone/ring a Powerstroke? Figure there would be some bearings and seals that get done while I am in there, but trying to keep this below the price of a shortblock...

I had no problem with the Continental gasser in my MF65...

What think y'all?

Aaron

PS. Purchase price of truck leaves some room for repairs. Thing was darn near give to me...

You may have a injector o ring leaking. This will cause some blue smoke especially when cold. Mine has 200,000 on it and will smoke until warmed up. After that it never uses any oil between oil changes. DH

They are a dry sleeved engine, the complicated part is getting the injectors back in the heads correctly because of the way the HEUI works. Unless it's chugging down oil or starting hard after sitting. I would drive it and smile.

I have a '96 psd and I know it is just getting broke in at 200k. It should go 400-500k. I fully agree with the other post, check how much oil it is using and consider rering only if consumption is high. Maybe replace the the injector o-rings first. Mine blows terrible blue till it gets to running good and yet not much oil is actually used.

Thanks, gonna let it be for a while. It does not use muck oil, just not used to the slight blue smoke on startup and uphill runs. Heck, might be those injector seals. I hear there is a tattletale sign if this is the case. Something like black specks in a filter or screen somewhere. Gonna google it.
Thanks again,

Aaron

How is the turbo? If the air filter is really dirty, and the turbo shaft seals are getting weak, it can suck oil from the turbo shaft seal. Some oil in the air intake is normal. If you can pour oil out of the air to air cooler, you have a problem.
