Took in my 1st critter the other week. So far its worked out pretty good.We have eaten more beef in the last week than we have in the last year.
As it turned out. We sold 1/2 the beef. That paid for the critter and all the feed I put into her Plus the proccessing.
As this was our 1st one we had asked a few people who do this for a living.
We ended up selling the 1/2 at live weight for $1.05 pound and the cust paid thier own proccessing.
This seemed to work well. No missunderstandings about what they get for what price.

next year I think I will add a couple pigs. I really like pork. Ether that or make a trade :)

Just a suggestion. if you're going to do some pork next year beside beef you'll need to get a bigger freezer. Ain't it nice to have all that meat just waiting to be eaten?

Looks great, when are you having all of us on here over for a cookout, lol. One thing I tried last year that I really liked was to have them vaccum seal instead of wrap in paper. Seems to help what gets eaten last stay fresher. It wasnt cheap but made a difference on some of the shoulder roasts.

Guess I'm selling too cheap. I get .925 a pound for whole live ones delivered to the slaughterhouse. I know a guy who works in a slaughterhouse up northeast of here, says they get $1.15 a pound up there. Just hate to feel like I'm ripping anybody off when they only bring in the low 80s at the sale right now.

My packer does everything in clear vaccum packing. I am still eating some from '06....
My area is too competative.. I had an ad running for holstein steers. Now this week a menninite guy ran an ad with the EXACT same wording as mine, but for 5 cents cheaper. I guy those guys are just willing to work for next to nothing...Kinda just rubs me the wrong way.

We just sold for what the going rate was at the time of sale. Has come down a few cents since.

We like to get a beef and hog done at the same time- then the pork trimmings are added to the ground beef- makes them juicier.

Sure beats the stuff in the stores doesn't it? We recently butchered our first Texas Longhorn steer, swear it is the best beef I've ever had.

We've always had our own steers for beef. Now that everyone is moved out of the house, Mom & Dad have one butchered for Christmas and we all take what we need when we come home. Always very tender & juicy. Better than store bought.
