Anyone here ever see one in run in person? I was wondering what they sounded like? The engine had two crankshts in it and a roots blower. I have "O" guage models of this engine one by Williams and the other by MTH. The MTH model has sound, smoke, what they call DCS means that it be controlled by using a hand held remote control that sends frequncys thrugh the track (I dont have that that, I just run it with a reguler transformer). Yea for me tractors and trains go together I try to collect both.

We had two of the opposing crank Fairbanks Morse engines on my ship. With a massive blower. I"d suspect it would sound the same.

The sound was simply diesel. Since the two cranks shared a common cylinder, it didn"t create any more frantic note or additional cylinder cound sounds.

Saw one (not running) and crawled around on it. Illinois Railway Museum. Near Belevdere (sp)in Northern Ill. They also have a Turbine powered GE LOCO. Way cool JimN

We had one that was one the submarine i was stationed on.It was a 12 cylinder 24 piston oppossing crank. Meaning top crank ran the blower and fuel pump and i believe water pump.Bottom crank ran the generater and oil pump.It was also air started by pumping air in the cylinders turnining it over. Awsome engine. When it was made it was a switcher for a railroad yard somewhere in denver then became a backup gen for a hospital out there. Then in 1968 the US Navy got it and put in in the USS BLUEFISH SSN675 . .

2 CYCLE. DIESELS PISTONS CAME TOGETHER WITH INJECTOR TN MIDDILE . OVERHULED A 3 CYL. OR 6 PISTON IN NUKE PLANT STAND BY GEN SET, LAST PROD. DATE 1947 STIL IN USE. RENE'

Speaking as a retired locomotive mechanic:
A good engine, and a very powerful locomotive,
but costly to build, compared to the General
Motors,V12s and V16s, which are just giant Detroit
diesels, They were very labor intensive to
maintain and Fairbanks-Morse only sold around
200 locomotives, and stopped production. Though
many roads tried a few, Milwaukee Road, and
Chicago & Northwestern had the most, probably
due to "hometown" loyality.
