I lost my dad tonight, fatal accident

Hi guys. It"s been a little while since I"ve posted on here, but usually always reading up on the forum. I wanted to share, and needed to vent a little bit. My dad, who was 73 died unexpectadly tonight. He was in very good health for his age. At 6:eek:o I had a call from my sister, (lives 10 miles from mom and dad in southeast Iowa, I"m 6 hours away in Nebraska) she said she had gotten a call from the sheriff and that dad had been in an accident and that she needed to come to the farm right away. She asked if they were going to the hospital and he said no, just come to the farm. I haven"t gotten all of the facts yet, and am leaving central NE early in the morning for SE Iowa. What I did get, was mom and dad were checking on a small brush pile fire. Dad always piled and burned brush in a small ravine/ditch on the side of a dirt road by our pasture. Dad got out of the truck and went to check on the small fire. Mom said she saw him fall into the ditch. She yelled for him and he didn"t respond (she assumed he couldn"t hear her) She got out of the truck and looked down in the ditch and couldn"t see him. She went around the barb wire fence and crossed at a gate and saw him laying in the bottom of the ditch (about 10 feet deep) with a small twig grasp in his hand and with his head laying on a large stump. She couldn"t reach him, because she couldn"t get across the fence. She ran for help at the neighbors and they cut the fence to get to him. When they got to him, he had no pulse or vital signs. Again, I don"t have all the facts yet, but appears he must have fallen and broken his neck or had severe head trama. Dad was the 6th generation of our family to farm that original heritage family farm started in 1842. His father passed when Dad was just 16 and he took the farm over at that time. He invested all of his time, sweat and effort into that farm and now he"s suddenly gone. Please say a prayer for my mother, sisters and I.

Not that it helps much but it seems he was doing something he loved on a place he loved. That is how I want to go. Please please please be kind to each other. We lost my uncle in september and now my cousins are fighting each other over money and land. Very sad.

Just read of your tragedy, your father controlled the farm for 57 years ? That's a very long time, he died doing what he loved, he was working on the family farm right up to his death, an honor... so many linger in a hospital bed ....keep the farm in family - I am also from a century farm in Indiana 1814-5th generation, my father is 86 and won't retire

Sorry to hear about your loss. Just goes to show how fleeting life can be and how we need to keep in touch with our loved ones, no matter how busy we are. My dad is 90 and I know I don't see him often enough. Hope you have many memories to see you through these sad times.

I don't think I've ever posted to you before, but my condolences go out to you. I will also say that while it's hard to see a loved one go, at least he went quickly and was living his life. I lost my Dad a few years ago to cancer, and it was slow and a terrible way to go. Make sure and remember all the good times you guys had. Tell stories and rememberances, I'm sure you'll see the smiles break out on the faces of his loved ones as they remember the good times too. God Bless.

sympathies sent; know the feeling of they won't give it up till they get caught in something or do a terrible fall. Mine is 91 and still bosses the farm. I have accepted the fact that it will happen ( finding caught in some sort of equipment) but you can't tell him anything yet so thats the way it will be. Cattle got him down twice last week.

Sorry, the pain of loosing somebody close beyond words.
I've been glad a couple of times for the well wishes of the good folks here.

I'm sorry to hear of your tragic loss. I remember the numbing heartbreak that went through me when I was told my Dad had suddenly passed away. Celebrate his life. Time will help.

Thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy from my family to yours. If God brought you to it, He will bring you through it.

You never want to loose a love one but i went thru mother dying over 6 years and my dad died instantly much like yours neither was easy but
to some degree you are better of with a quick death. Most older farmers are real tough and for something to happen where thay can,t go it makes for a slow life. Again sorry about your loss.. Jerry Watkins
