James has decided to get a digital video camera to take movies of our farm operations/tractors. If any of ya"ll have one, we would like some input on the features, cost, ease of use, picture quality, and how you like it. I left my email open for your answers.

Nancy, we've got a JVC mini-recorder; don't remember the model number off-hand; we like it alright, but almost never use it. What we like MUCH better is a dvd slideshow; there are lots of programs out there; the one we use is linked below; can't remember how much the software was, but it was quite inexpensive. Just add your choice of digital photos; add your choice of music and start burning dvds. I'm the (unoffical) church photographer; in January, I select about 200 pics from the last year; set 'em to music and burn a copy for every member. (It's a small church) The first one takes about and hour and a half to burn; the rest of 'em only 5-8 minutes each.

Are you going to use this camera for motion or still photography, or both?

We have a Canon G9 automatic that will capture both video & still images...At 12.1 mega pixels the camera does a very fine job.

Recently Canon has upgraded the G9 to the G10 at 14.7 mega pixles...Wow!

Look around, the G10 can be bought for around $300

I use one nearly everyday.

Currently it's a Panasonic PV-GS 320 MiniDv

I prefer the mini dv format as it is easily transfered (through a firewire cable and card)to my windows computer's built in video editor software, where I can trim off the fat and save it to the hard drive, or upload to youtube.

I had an earlier model before and thought of updating it. I tried a couple newer models but found the MiniDv and it's .avi format most user friendly.

It also clicks off (on a SDcard) mega pixel stills or 640x480 frames while shooting video at some outrageous steady shot zooms.

It can be quite daunting as you expand beyond basic video production as mentioned above.

I have since added other video editing software that makes file format juggling a little easier. Sort of...
