Question on Ammeter

Hello;

I turn on the lights with the tractor not running , D-17 Allis, and the needle stays at zero. Start it , and it swings to the right to about 8 amps. Is the AMMETER bad?Thanks

Depends how it's wired in but most likely no...

For the ammeter to show discharge in an engine off situation power to the accessory wiring would need to feed through the meter.

Move your lights wiring connection to the other side of your Ammeter and you should be good to go (your lights are connected directly to a battery hot lead somewhere). Only one wire from the battery should connect to one side of the Ammeter - the generator (or alternator) and lights and any other electrical loads connect to the other side.

Don't forget to disconnect one battery cable when you work on this - all Ammeter wires have battery voltage on them.

If the lights are fed off the correct Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter Id expect a working ammeter to register a - discharge if they are switched ON. Pass a magnet over the ammeter front n see if you can make the needle deflect - and + as it should if its not stuck.

Next make sure allllllll loads PLUS the Generators output are BOTH fed off one side of the ammeter the load side, while theres usually just one wire over on the other Supply side which gets to the batetrys hot ungrounded post, often via a wire to where the big battery cables attaches to a starter switch or solenoid.

If the lights were accidentally fed from the ammeters supply terminal (one that wires to battery/starter) they wouldnt show a minus ammeter discharge as they should cuz its NOT passing through the ammeter.

Which side are you refering to as the supply side,the + side or the- side,or does it matter?

Depends. If a Positive ground battery, then the supply side of ammeter should be marked +. If a Negative ground battery,then supply side of ammeter should be marked -.
