The Corn Isn't Drying Down

3 weeks ago this Saturday, I picked 4 ears by hand and shelled them and tested them for moisture. 21.5% I got everything ready and shelled some endrows tonite. Brought a sample in and tested, 22.5%. I thought it would have dried down some and I could start combining and air dry it by now. Guess I will combine a couple more wagons and put in the bin and turn on the air and wait. BUMMER!! Chris

Corn here is in central IL. is down to 15. A few loads in the 14's a few in the 16's, not bad, and i think it is as dry as it is going to get. Might as well start picking and pay the drying charge.

Hand picked is always going to be drier than machine picked. See my post on the combine board- picked some low spots to get ready for the tiler- 37%. Neighbors talk about trying some fields- 26-32%. Been combining since 1976, last year was the only year I did not buy LP to dry. Northern corn belt always takes it in the shorts...LP every year, farther to ship to markets...........21% and air dry is nothing to complain about.

Wet here too in NW MO, elevator is taking corn but there drier is running non stop. First time I can remember it running since I moved here, the fuel truck has backed up to the barrel several times already, real money maker there. A guy brought a load in at 34%, had to scoop it out with shovel, heard he got a 60% dock ouch.

yeah i tested one field this week. one end of the field was at 16.7% and the other was at 22.6%. was gonna start combing next week but it looks like that my have to wait. might make the outside rounds and split the field so it will dry out better(hopefully) but i might just wain another couple weeks

I agree, 21% will dry fine if you can get air through it. Might as well pick because its about as dry as its gonna get if its still in the field.

I'm finally getting some 21% corn, was 25-27% when I started. Like JMS says, here in MN and around you almost always need to dry, just hope it is below 24% or it gets expensive.

Hey Paul, About what does it cost too dry from 24% too 15% or whatever moisture your dry too?

Does everyone dry to the same moisture content or does use determine moisture content?

Here at our elevator it would cost you 5 cents a point to get that corn dried i.e. 45 cents a bushel. Everybody gripes about the shrink, but that happens in the field, in your bin or at the elevator, it doesn't matter.

I combined mine last saturday, was 17%, neighor next to mine is still ar 22%, been at that moisture for 2 weeks. Different brands, same maturity. His kernals are huge and his husk's are not as loose as mine, guessing that has something to do with it. I know many guyys in the heavy soils that are still at 40% or wetter.
