Serial Numbers and Battery Grounding

Help. I recently inherited a Ford 8N and can not locate the serial number so I can make sure I order the correct parts. Does anyone know where I should look? Also I know it is still a 6 volt but do not know if it is a positive or negative ground battery I need. Any suggestions onhow I can find out. I'm new to this and need all the help I can get. Thanks for any help you can give me.

There is no such thing as a positve or negative ground battery. there is just a battery.

Ground potential is determined by what battery cable.

N's left the factory s 6v positive ground.

sn is found on the block, left side.. above the starter, aft of the oil can. justunder the seam of the head and block.. it's on a 4" x 1" boss.. it is lightly hand stamped.. all 8n's sn's start with 8n.. all 9n/2n sn's start with 9n.

It's possible to find 9n/2n enines on 8n tractors.. etc.. as the engines are mor eor less interchangeable.. etc...

you'll get more N advice if you actually hang arounf the N forum...

Thanks Soundguy: Using your directions I was able to find it immediately. Now the hard part is trying to determine the actual numbers. I used a magnifying glass and flash light to light it from different angles but the numbers are just about all rusted away. I'll get bak to it shortly and see if I can make out the rest with time. I really appreciate the help.

Rub chalk or a white crayon across it.. can help.. especially with the light.

even if you can't get the last numbers.. the first few can help you pinpoint year.
