pecan trees

What's hapening this year, first it's too hot and dry'and then it's too wet and cool. Our pecan trees have been great producers'but this year it's been a bust. What do we need to do to get production back like it was?Have heard that they need zinc to hold the fruit'but how applied' spraying or spread on the ground? How much water do they need. How about other fertilizer. Our 8 trees 'in the past few years have done very good with little care.So what do you think. We sure enjoy our pecan pies.Help>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Have you called your local county extension agent?
If they don't know they can call the university
they're assoiciated with. There's a man in AL that raises pecan trees and he may know. He use to post on some of these forums, but I haven't seen him on here lately. Hal

everything you'd want to know about Pecan tree care. This is the site I copies off when I planted my Hearty Northern Pecan trees last year.I'm looking foreword to picking 'em. (though I know they take a while before they start bearing

Hey Ken, this is the first time in 7 years that mine have produced, not the best quality but they finally started putting out.

Ken

My Brother-in-law lives in Lubbock and his are putting on the best they have produced in the 8 years he has lived there. He uses some kind of a spike I"ll try to find out what it is and let you know.

I'm in Missouri. We have two 14 year old trees and I planted 300 more pecan trees in March , 2007.In 2006 the larger of the two established trees gave up about 60 ponds of nice nuts. In 2007 we had a hard late frost and it killed all the buds. This year it looks like only maybe 10 or 15 pecans on the tree. I think it is carryover from the frost in 2007. Some of the frozen buds are still on there. I don't think I am going to fertilize it or anything. If no nut production next year I may change my mind. Did you get that hard frost in April , 2007 ?

I have about 800 native pecan trees (southern Oklahoma)and I only found one tree so far with nuts, wevils(sp)got to them.I think it was the late frost. We did have a good year last year so I can't complain to much.

Pecans here do well, but all we have is a darn squirrel farm... Those fuzzy-tailed rats get the pecans before the green husk falls off..

Pecan trees usually have alternating good and bad years, but no production is not something usually seen. Here in central Oklahoma, we've got about 350 papershell trees and not one of them has nuts this year. The last two years we had more nuts on the trees than we knew what to do with, but being a small operation we can't afford to spray for bugs. Thus, the last two years all the nuts went to the pecan weevils.

As for you, I would wait until next year to see whether it was just a bad year, or if there is something actually causing poor or no production. Something that is fixing to get our orchard is overcrowding, and is an issue we are working on.

Clemson does recommend zinc for pecan trees, go to that site listed below that someone provided for Clemson University, I have used some of that information. Here on the Gulf Coast of Alabama the drought messed up our harvest last year. This year the only trees that have set, and held decent nuts are the ones that received zinc in the last 3 years. I put zinc down on some of them right after Katrina in 2005, and didn"t put down anymore on other trees because I got too busy. This year I am going to put it out again. I bought the zinc at a local fertilizer distributer, and put it out with my cone/broadcast spreader on the tractor. 3-45lbs bags I believe. Clemson recommends the broadcast rates, and time intervals. The zinc seems to help.
