806 Farmall Steering

Looking for some advice on my tractor. 806 farmall that runs great, only problem is the steering. In colder weather power steering is hit or miss. Warm weather seems ok. After turning back and forth and shuffling the oil( by letting hitch and front blade up and down) it usually kicks in. PS pump not getting primed, or is it about to go out? Any adivice welcomed.

Is it setting up a screamin' noise? If so, change the filter.

The filter is bypassing and the fist symptom is that darned steering in cold weather.

I have changed filters, and oil recently.... still the same. Condensation problems with this series of tractors???

As the Boys said FILTER we have for some reason lately been have lot of trouble.

Something in our tractors looks like liquid RTV.Filters be clean as can be but that slimy stuff what ever it is.

Like Allen said change the filter and i will also add if the oil looks milky then change that also . Now just because ya change the filter and the oil NOT ALL THE oil is drained . There an be water mixed with the oil in the lines from the MCV up to the ft. bolster and in cold weather can sorta start to freeze .So ya may want to crack the fittings up on the ft. and sorta FLUSH the lines . Also ya may need to go thru the MCV as the flow control valve may be sticking a bit and the tractor has to warm up before it is working correctly. Could also be that the springs in the MCV are getting weak and you may or may not need a new pump , but the only way to know for sure is to flow rate the pump and check the pressures and this should be done by someone that has a flow rater and the special fittings to hook up to the MCV.

On the left side of the tractor, behind the battery is a small hydraulic block, under that block is a small plastic check valve, that keeps the steering from leaking back when the tractor is not running, some times it sticks, this may be your trouble.

Thanks for the advice. I will check that tomorrow. Oil is milky color but it has been that way ever since I changes it back in the summer. I was told that my stering pump is losing prime... how would I know this for sure before change it out?

That problem is cause by shot runs , ya get it just warmed up then ya put it away and it cools down and sweets . Just not working it long enough to cook the moisture out . We have the same problem as in the winnter we use the 706 gasser for the feeding and grinding of feed and everyday it is started up run for and hour or do then shut down till the next day then once a week it grinds two batches of feed , Now that will warm her up but once a month i change the filter during the cold months . IF the temp is like a yoyo it can get bad fast.

There is your problem Milky oil , that is causing part of the problem as it is plugging the filter. Now you can either change the oil and do as i said about cracking the two lines up ft that feed the steering cyl. , Or ya can change the oil again along with the filter . When you changed the oil this past summer did you PULL ALL the plugs on the bottom of the transmission and rear end??? Your system is still contaminated with water and until it is all cleaned out you will have problems. Now you say that your MCV pump is bad my question is when you do change fluid will it pick up prime with out tomuch of a problem or ya have trouble picking up prime???

NO that MCv sump check plug is to keep oild up for manual steering and brakes when the engine is off has nothing to do with slugish steering . HE already told me his problem Water in the oild and the filter is tryen it's best to clean it but there is to much of it . HE may have a weak MCV pump but his system is contaminated . And when it gets really cold out he will have nothing .

I didnt pull all the plugs when I changed it before, but will the next time. about how many plugs will I be looking for? I would also like to use a metal filter instead of the crappy paper ones that IH sells. Know of any options. Sorry but I dont think I know MCV pump??? Tractor has no problems of picking up prime at all when it is warm.

THere are three , ONe just behind the bellhousing and one a bit back from that one and the one under the drawbar , Then ya have the two final drives at the bottom of each axle . They are all by then selfs and ya MUST fill them thru the fill plug on the back side of each axle housing . . As for the filter it is doing just what it was made for to FILTER dirt and water . Now since you hy Tran is so back it may take a couple more changes to clean it all up along with changing the filter a lot more often as that filter will trap the water. Now as to your MCV pump unless ya get it flowrated ya don't know if it is bad or if the O/Ring between the speed transmission and range transmission is the problem So here just dump in3-5 gallon more Hytran . Now i don't knw if you are using Hy Tran of something else But the Hy Tran really is better . This problemis not just going to go awy with one more change as the whole system is contaminated and there is water in places you can not even believe. So the change and then change filters every couple days for awhile .

Guess I have been lucky. My Gas Farmall 806 is run infrequently (too much day job) and I have never had any trouble of this nature. I would definitely change the oil and filter several times though before I start replacing things. Good luck.

Ok.. I have a question for the Ole Southern boys on this..... Does a 616 Hydrostat Cotton (Picker Late 60"s early 70"s) have a steering control valve like my 806 Farmall does? 806 D361 engine. Thanks,
