Well since I'm doing this clutch job I have a choice of an Alaimiun or a cast bell housing. The Al. one is a closed bottom one and the cast is an open bottom one. I can care the least about the weight factor so if it was you which one would you use and why. I'm leaning towards the cast one because you can look up in side and also do not have to pull it off if you have to do a clutch job a 2nd time

The cast is a better deal for all the reasons listed. I had a feeling it was internal linkage. If you use a used T/O bearing Pilot shaft, (what I was told to call it) be sure it has no visible wear or cracks. Jim

I looked the replacement over real good and also cleaned it up with a wire wheel on my grinder and it looks to be in very good shape. Sure glad I keep old 4 speeds laying around for just this type of problems. I don't know for sure right now but I think the pilot bearing may have gone bad which would cause the shaft to brake up like it did

Take a look at the fractured surfaces of the broken T/O shaft. If there is a clean fracture through it all around, it was possibly side force (inside out, or outside in)
If it shows an old tarnished crack much of the way around, it just failed. Good luck putting it back, Jim

Well it broke right next to where it hooks up to the tranny and the brake is sort of ruff so figure it was just plain old. I have most of it back together other then stabbing the tranny in which I'll try to do tomorrow
