Bad Coil??? --FIX--

Thanks again for your thoughts about my ignition problem. Since I hadn't touched anything since buying the tractor 7 years ago, I did a major tune-up and its running well now.

I can't say exactly what the problem was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the coil. I replaced the cap, rotor, condenser and coil but that didn't change anything -- still no fire. I had hesitated to pull the points because I couldn't see how to get them out. But finally I got new points in and also replaced the ground side wire from the coil to the points and she fired up. So I guess it was one of those two things.

Funny thing is the points didn't look that bad to me. There was one fairly deep pit, but I'm sure I drove old Chevies as a kid with points that were a lot worse than these. Also, that wire had no apparent breaks -- just was bent near the terminal in a way I didn't like.

Anyhow, she's running for now. Thanks again for your help. Bob

I would bet the fix was in fact the points. Cars and truck get run almost daily but a tractor will sit for weeks and that is something points don't like and thats why they stop working

Most all points made the last 20 years or more are cheap junk only have a light coating of tungsten or platinum and once pitted are throw aways won"t stand any filing like the old ones did. You can still buy points for racing or aircraft mags with pure platinum or tungsten contacts but like buying gold.

Platinum? You must be joking! A thin coating of Palladium at best, I would think1

Old is right on money on it. After tractors are not started for a while they seem to get moisture or something on the contacts. I usually take a piece (sliver) of very fine wet-dry paper fold it in half where the grit area to the outside and run thru the contacts and then turn the paper over where backing of paper is on outside and run it thru the contacts you will notice dark substance on the paper. Check the point opening and put rotor and cap back on and in most cases I have found the engine will start up. Mike
