OT/VCR and Direct TV

An old gal in the coffee shop says she records off of Direct TV on her VCR. She couldn't explain how to set up to do it,she just said she does. Does anybody know how? We run the dish and the VCR with the TV on channel 4 if that helps.

Yes,that's the hookup, but do you just put in the tape and hit record? Back when we just had over the air antenna TV,the VCR had to be on the channel that you were recording. So just record channel 4?

OK,thanks. I didn't even know if the VCR was capable of 3 digit channels, much less did I want to go through and program in 115 direct TV channels.

Or for better quality video recordings hook up audio/video cables from the dish box to the VCR and select audio/video in. sometimes chanel 00 on the VCR.

Your VCR have Audio and VIdeo INputs?
Your Satalite receiver will have audio and video outputs, cable them up with RCA cables and you can record the channel you are watching on the dish

You hook it up just as described. Just remember that you do all your channel selection with the dish. The VCR always stays on Channel 4 even if you are recording from a higher number channel.

OK,I think the problem I'm gonna run into here is,I can't record while I'm watching something else like I used to off the antenna can I? There's never anything on worth watching at 9pm eastern, but sometimes there are 2 shows on at 8.

You're correct since the dish receiver is the tuner that converts the signal you can only see, record, or both, one channel at a time. To record one channel and watch another you would need a second dish receiver.

With broadcast TV, you could use the TV tuner to watch one channel on the TV and the VCR tuner to record another.

Simple call Direct TV and tell them that you canceling your subscription to go over to Dishnet because they have two channel down and a built in Hard drive to record anything that you want while watching another channel.
If you like Direct they will give you an updated unit if not then change over to dishnet.
