adding brakes to a trailer

I am looking at buying a used 6x10 enclosed trailer. How hard would it be to add electric brakes to it? It has a 3000 lb torsion bar axle. I know brakes are not required, but it is going to see a lot use and trailers are a lot safer with brakes on them.

Look at the axle, if there is aplace to bolt the backing plate on.... it's usally a square pc of steel behind the hub ..
If its there then all you need to do is get the brake kit for that axle and rim size .. I know ..northerntool.com has the kits ..

hope this helps you ... Mark

i just added a brake axle to my 16' utility trailer. it was about the same price to buy a new axle with brakes installed as it was to buy a kit and have all the hassle of trying to install it, plus you probably need a tandem axle refurbish kit anyways and replace all of the plastic bushings that are on most axles anyway.

Just a suggestion. Before you get too deep into that used trailer, compare the cost to a new trailer that is ready to go. You may be pleasantly surprised, or you may decide to go with the used one after all.

The trailer I am looking at is $1600. New ones that I've seen are runing $3000-$3500. The listing mentions fresh paint, so I'm a little skeptical on condition. If it's everything it claims to be, it is probably worth it. Thanks for the replies.

You are looking at about $500 to $700 for a brake kit and all the work to install plus a controller I would think real hard about a new one ready to.

Northern Tool has the brake assemblies for $200/pair and my pickup already has a working brake controler. Assuming the frame is solid and the inside of the trailer isn't too banged up, it's probably worth my time to save 50% over a new one.

I put brakes on my 6x12 enclosed. I bought the kits from randpcarriages off ebay. Total cost was only like $139 and it took me about 90 minutes to install them. Just make sure you get the right bolt pattern hubs so your wheels work when you get done.
