Wiring a Hitachi alternator, which terminals?

Hello all, I am currently helping a friend rewire an IH B414. He's got a Hitachi alternator to replace the Lucas generator but it's labelled differently to a Delco so I'm a little out to sea. So far as I know the alternator originally came off a John Deere tractor. There are 4 connection points, labelled F,N,E, and A. I know that E is a ground and A is the main output terminal. F and N are two spade connections that are perpendicular to each other, with the side that has two mounting ears down, F is vertical and N is horizontal. Does anyone know which is the sensing terminal and which is the excitation terminal? Many thanks, tractorsam

I"ve got a Hitachi on my B-414. I tried to put a 10SI Delco on it first, but it was too fat and the hood hit it when opening and closing. So, I took a Hitachi off one of the many junk Subarus up in field. All it has is a ground post, a big main output post, and a two-prong plug on top. Perpendicular, like your"s. Mine is marked "S" and "L." "S" is on top, has a bigger gauge wire, and I have it hooked to the main output post - so it must be the sensor wire. The lower and smaller wire - hooked to "L" is my exciter wire.

Many thanks for the help there. Hopefully I'll get it running tomorrow. The first time in who knows how long. A few mods to the generator bracket to enable the alternator to fit and I might have to widen the pulley and then finish the wiring and I should be all set. Thanks again, tractorsam
