O/T Skin Cancer

All the years out in the sun finally caught up to me. I just came back from having a piece of my lower lip cut off. Not a big piece, but bad enough to require surgery. While growing up when Dad was farming I never wore a hat of any kind. Now I just wear a ball cap when I'm outside, or on my tractor, but after this I will be wearing something different on my head to protect me from the sun. The shot the doctor gave me before they did the cutting is wearing off, and it hurts like the dickens. The pain pills dont seam to be working all that well. I am sure others have gone through this. Wear those hats. Stan

Yep, my brother just had surgery on his back for skin cancer. Doctors called it Basil Cell Carcinoma. Dad died of Melanoma 34 years ago. I was just 15 & my brother was just 6 years old at the time.

Coupe36 hope everything is OK Melenoma is very curable if caught early. I've had a few bouts myself on my ear and arm. Mom was one of the smart ones she used to lather us down with a concoction of Iodine and baby oil. Still in later years didn't wear a hat and was impressing the girls with no shirt. Good Luck

I had a piece about the size of a 50 cent piece cut out between my upper lip and my nose, in 1998. It went as far down as the top of the lip, and touched the base of the nose. Had general anasthetic for a 2 hour plastic surgery to pull everything back together. I ended up with a scar that isn't too bad, and no feeling in that area. My smile is crooked! It was a Basal Cell Carcinoma, and hasn't shown signs of recurrence. But you can bet that I'm showing up at my dermatologist twice a year, like clockwork, to get other little gremlins and grackles burned or cut off as they appear.

Its nothing to mess around with. I wear a straw hat ALWAYS, in the sun. Cancer doc called it "Fairhaired Farmboy Syndrome," and said I'll be prone to getting more of them for the rest of my life.

Here's wishing you a quick recovery. A 70-some year old neighbor had some cancer taken out of his lower lip last winter and he got over the visual effects fairly quickly. He never wore a cap and of course a farmer of his age spent a lot of time in the sun before cabs were put on tractors.

I read somewhere that if a teenager is in the sun a lot and is not protected it increases the risk of skin cancer later on. A lot of us walked beans and baled hay in our young years with our shirt off so if that article is right, we set ourselves up years ago. Jim

Have had a few chunks taken off lower lip and forehead. Main thing is to catch the stuff early. Hope you guys are doing this. I also wear a brimmed hat and use sun screen.

Scary business. When we were young they never preached that much about UV rays, etc. My two young boys always wear sunscreen when outside for any length of time.I myself, after years in the sun as a carpenter, don't seek it for recreational purposes anymore. Most of the time I wear a baseball hat.Hope your recovery goes well.

Had a nice sized 'steak' taken off my upper arm about ten years ago. Lots of visits to the Dermatologist since. Been wearing long sleeved shirts in summer along with big hat and sun block. The big trick is to get it checked and treated early. Melanoma is deadly stuff.

The wife has had several removed that were melanoma she goes every year to be checked. My self I'm not one of those light skinned people and never had any trouble with the sun.
There little or no cancer of any kind in my family.

PS anyone want a bad ticker or Arthritis or MS we got lots of that stuff.

Had melanoma 20 years ago. Spot was quarter sized. Cut like 6 x 10 inches off back. Melanoma can spread to brain or other places. Basal cell and squamous cell I have been told and read usually don't spread or metasize. This info is 20 years old, though. So check with medical people. Hope you are fine. Best doctor I know is the Great Physician.
