What is best to use to properly clean an extremly dirty carburator prior to rebuilding. So far have not found anything that works very well. Thanks.

Some brands names are Berrymans, Gunk, Kleen Flo, but a gallon of MEK methyl ethyl ketone found in the paint section works well to soak one in too. For rust you will just have to use a wire or low pressure bead blasting with glass beads NOT sand.

What have you been using? I soak carbs in kerosene first, then blow it out and use the carb cleaner and more compressed air. I've heard that brake parts cleaner works good, but I've never used it.

Auto parts stores have Berrymans or other brands that come in a gallon can with a basket for small parts that you can soak a craburetor in.There are higher priced ones in a 5 gallon can that you can fit any carburetor in.For the gallon can one I have had to pour it in something bigger to fit a 4 barrel carb in it,(some of those plastic containers like tupperware out of the kitchen with a lid will work, just dont put a cake back in it or anything you want to eat again,or even a 5 gallon bucket with a lid)after soaking it I pour it back in the gallon can.The gallon can usually works for a single barrel carb like a tractor carb.I clean a lot of the dirt off of the outside of it with a wire brush or compressed air and a squirt can of carb cleaner, then tear it apart and soak it.The cleaner lasts a lot longer if you do it that way.It evaporates if you dont keep the cover on it when you soak a carb.It will look like its new when it comes out most of the time, then I wash it off with water by pulling the basket out of the cleaner and dunking it in a 5 gallon bucket with water in it before I mess with it because I dont like the smell of that stuff and water knocks it off. Then blow it out with compressed air before you put it back together making sure if air goes in some where it comes out somewhere else or its still plugged up and you might have to soak it some more and clean out small passages with a wire or whatever you can to get them open. Its real important to make sure the passages are open or it wont usually work right until you do.
