Recently was traveling in Northwest Kentucky (west and south of Owensboro) and noticed some very long conveyors (I think) across fields and roads that seemed to go for miles. What are they for? I thought possibly they could carry coal from mines to the Ohio River? Anywhere near correct?

I would expect coal. There are many long ones in the mountains of Eastern KY I know.

Beltlines is what I grew up calling them.

Where are you fellers at in eastern Ky? I"m in Greenup County. I spent the better portion of my life as an engineer with CSX hauling coal from Russell, Ky. to Columbus Ohio. Years ago..like in the late 70"s....I went up Big Sandy into Shelby and Martin.

You were probably in Union County and it was a coal belt going to the Ohio River. I have heard that it is one of the longest in the world, but I'm not sure.

Thats what I'd bet too. The Peabody belt crosses 60 twice between the creek and Morganfield. If you were going west the first one is going from Highland mine to the prep plant to be cleaned and then the second one is going to the river.

Your back in the aera i grow up in. I allways heard it was the longest coal belt line in the states Was raise out side of morganfield Living in whitesville now. hate to grease all the rollers in that thing

I'm just outside of Paintsville, in Johnson County. I work anywhere from Pikeville to Louisa and I've got family in Columbus so I'm real familar with US 23 all the way up to Columbus. Nice to know they are some "local boys" on here....

Casey,
Even better, is now I know there is at least a few who "get it" when we say something..hehe! I am well aware that we eastern Ky. hillbillies are a different breed, the rest recognize it, but only we appreciate it! This Scotch-Irish blood just can"t be bred out of us..thank God.

Hey.....where is it they have that big flea market there around Louisa? I"ve thought about running down there to see what kind of junk I might see. I heard the one in Paintsville (at the stockyards) is all but dead. I used to go gun trading there.

Thanks for all the great replies. We were in Union County on 60. Actually traveled from Carbondale, Illinois to Owensboro to visit the International Bluegrass Music Museum. That"s a really nice piece of Bluegrass history. So do any of you who responded play music - bluegrass, country, gospel? In retirement I"m trying to learn the fiddle. I know there are lots of famous fiddlers who are from Kentucky.
