I had a coolant leak on a Vac case that had been sitting for a long time. I had the head machined but he said it wasn"t too far off and it might have other problems. It looks like one of the sleeves might be up just a little bit. Can I try and knock it back in with a piece of wood or would it be better to try and file it down?

The sleeves should sit up just a tad or the head gasket will not seal them like they should. A VAC, is a wet sleeve engine so you may just have bad sleeve seals and the one that is sticking up will probably also be the problem one

For goodness sakes! don't file it down! there's a reason its not in place, that stuff is precision machined to give the standout needed for proper sealing, the best thing to do if you are that far is to remove the pan, pistons and rods , remove the sleeves and clean everything and put it back together right with new sleeve seals, but if you would even entertain the thought that you can file it down and make it right, maybe you should get a knowledgable mechanic friend to give you some guidance. mEl

Those seals at the bottom of the sleeves are probably leaking from age. Drop the pan and set a clean container beneath the engine and see if any coolant is dripping. The engine need's to be torn down to replace them. Be sure to clean that area thoroughly where the seals are before installing the new seals. Hal
