Combine road hogs !!!!

Boy oh boy, today I was slowed down by those road hog combines twice. 1st time it was a red one, 2nd time it was a green one. They took up the whole highway AND EACH TIME IT TOOK ME AN EXTRA 10 MINUTES TO GET WHERE I WAS GOING !!!!! Oh the nerve of those farmers. Ok don't chew me up Im just kidding. There was two big combines as I said but it didn't bother me at all. Maybe it's just me but it sure seems like I've seen a lot of new ones this year in my area. It would scare me to death to make a purchase like that the way things are right now, WOW !!!! Also have seen a lot of new ( big ) tractors and equipment in my area. Anybody else notice this or is it just me ?

Here in NY about ten years ago a combine with a thirty foot head was being demoed nearby and everyone jumped in their trucks and went to gawk at this monster. Now there are lots of them and some thirty-five.

The guy that farms some of my ground just bought a JD 9750 combine with a 35 ft head. The tires are 6ft tall and 6ft wide.It is 4 or 5 ft wider than the lane on our state highway without the head.

Most of John Deere's 2009 production has already been sold out. If you want a new machine, better put your name on the list for a 2010. They will start production on that line pretty soon. For what it's worth, John Deere stock is a pretty good buy all things considering.

PS, many of the farm deeds go to the center of the road, and they pay taxes out to the center of the highway, so i many cases, they do in fact "own the road"

Our local JD dealer built a new store out by the Interstate, but kept the old premises in town 6 miles away for dealer-prepping new tractors, combines, etc. Then--they drive them from the old place past our house to the new place by the Interstate. This is a gravel road, but it carries a lot of traffic and there are several hills.

It can be more than a little unnerving to crest a hill maybe 50 mph and be faced with a combine coming at you with a header from ditch to ditch. And this can be any time of the year, not just at harvest time when you're alert for it.

I suggested they have a pickup run in front of the combine, but they're ALLMIGHTY JOHN DEERE and it went in one ear and out the other. Maybe after they've killed someone and get sued for $5 million they'll wake up.

Most of the times I've run 50 or better on a gravel road I was alot more worried about what was BEHIND me than what I was meet'n!!

35 is about the right safe speed for gravel and if it's fresh gravel slower. At least that's my thoughts.

years ago you the land owner was responsible for the distance of road built on your land. such as gravel hauling and ocaisional grading.

Here in Mn. if you take up more than one lane of road you need to have an escort vieicle. not sure how that is figured on a gravel road.

The speed limit is 50 on gravel here, and most of the time it's safe enough. Don't know what kind of gravel roads ya'll have.

That was soooo true to a bunch of us! I have a memory that surfaces in dreams once in a while about running that speed a foot or two behind a car to avoid eating dust too. I was the passenger too - shudder!

The only gravel roads round here a sane and sober person in a car would dive 50 is a few old haul roads the counties have smoothed out. They are about 50' wide and pretty strait and packed hard as a rock. Most of the gravel roads here are real narrow, curvey, and loose. 70 on a 4wheeler is one thing but in a car or truck 40 is about all you can get away with, unless you have a real good reason. Don't want to make habit of it.

Can't say as I have ever seen a gravel road with a speed limit.

In Virginia we have lots of State gravel roads and the speed limit is 55 unless otherwise posted. Lot of them it is ok to do that but on some it would be pretty risky. It is sorta funny to be traveling down a gravel road and see a sign as you approach the paved road that says "Reduced Speed Ahead" and it will be 45 mph

so you would rather do 70 on a 4 wheeler than 40 with a truck?? and you would feel safer??

what kind of logic is that??

Yeah everyone was spending lots of money hoping for good crop price to pay for that equipment but as usual the Wall St. boys and government messed that up for everyone now. Many will be lucky if they can actually pay for all that new stuff and not wind up having a auction next year especially if they bought it on a note with fine print like those mortgage loans had. Just be careful on those roads out there the BIG train wreck is just around the corner.

I think the old saying of,... "Don't count your chickens until they hatch",... still has some merit that farmers might take note of.
