Trucking rates for grain

A neighbor called and wanted me to help him haul corn. When finished he said call me and tell me what I owe you. I have a C-70 and hauled around 375 bushel at a time. Had to truck it 16 mile one way. Don't want to screw him, just want it to be fair for both parties.

$2.50 a mile. That dont sound like much, but it gives you a place to start. It dont sound like much, but your time is worth something.

Add up your trip tickets and charge him ten cents for every bushel hauled across the scale.

Then, be sure and give him the tickets, as they are his "invoice/pay slip/voucher" for his product.

I agree that 10 cents per bushel would not be out of line. We charge 8 cents for a 16 mile trip with the semi, but with smaller loads you need a little more than that.

When the "custom wheat harvesters" got here (South Dakota) this summer, they were charging $0.23/bu. to haul from the combine. One guy wouldn't budge from the 23 to make short hauls to the bin, so the farmer made him make the 20 mile haul to town where he had to sit in line and wait. Combiner was mad, but I don't blame the farmer. If I'm paying $0.23/bu it just as well go to town. We need a little hauled to town, couldn't keep up when we had 2 1680 CIH combines going and making close to 50 bu/acre. The guy charged $0.17/bu. Nineteen mile haul with a semi. Everyone was satisified.

I dont know what a gas burner like that gets per mile,or is it a diesel? If its under 10 miles(this is last years price)to the elevator, with a diesel that gets 4 miles per gallon, its 12 cents a bushel. Now I think,I say think, the guy I drive for has went to 15 cents a bushel, maybe 16 cents a bushel because of the price of fuel this year.If its more than 10 miles,up to 20 miles its more by 2 or 3 cents with a semi that can haul 1000 bushels at a time.Everybody was happy with that last year, have not heard any griping this year. The price of everything has gone up,tires, fuel, oil, antifreeze, and even costs more for me to drive to work,so its too bad,but the price has to go up.If you have a gas burner, and you are driving it,not paying a driver, maybe 10 cents a bushel is ok,but I think it might ought to be 12 depending mostly on your gas mileage, and the price of everything thats gone up.One thing hurting you is the 375 bushels a load. That may be all you can haul legal, but if it was more bushels a load it would be worth more money,at least it would to me.
