Warping carb

I took off a carb this morning because it was wet and seems to be weeping fuel. I had inadvertently left the fuel valve turned on for two days and again rediscovered why I had started the habit of always turning it off. After taking it apart I found that the top section is slightly warped and won't sit evenly on the gasket. Its a Zenith aluminum carb (12773) and it is positioned only an inch away from the block, so I'm thinking that the heat has warped the carb. Does this sound feasible and what can be done? Is this when I need to have the surfaces ground? Should I use a heat shield?
Any other ideas?

Also, are there any site recommendations for ordering new carbs online?
Thanks

This site and many other parts vendors sell new Zenith carbs. What does it fit ? 12773 is not in any late Zenith catalogs. Many new carbs today are universal fits many with universal linkages that work well on some applications but a real pain to adapt to others. Very light surfacing on fine grit paper on a true flat surface may help yours along with a new gasket. Just make sure jets or nothing is sticking out when surfacing it and clean out all passage ways and jets well. Don't use that RTV silicone stuff on it.

If your block got hot enough to warp the carb you would have problems that would make the carb problem seem like a fly spec.

Common problem with newer aluminum Zenith carbs. They will warp the top half if you tighten the screws too much---and it doesn't take much. Some carb rebuilders refuse to work on them for this reason. I have one on my Allis B and have very carfully resurfaced it with a large fine flat file, but it takes time and patience. Then you have to be careful to not overtighten it again. I keep saying someday I'll find a good deal on an old cast iron Zenith and replace it, but haven't done it yet. Good luck,
Paul

What about sanding it down with a fine grit on a piece of glass, like we do to fit up the clearances on oil pumps?

The stamping that holds the float hinge is in the way, unless you drill out the rivets and re-rivet it when you are done.

Why can't we use a gasoline resistant gasket goop here? Isn't permatex no 2. gas resistant?
