Darn #$%^X birds

The early pecans are starting to open. As soon as the hulls get a little loose the birds get the nut. Instead of waiting for them to drop, I have to knock the loose ones out and pick them up before the birds get them. Anyone else having this problem?

I know it"s dangerous to walk under a pecan tree this time of years.

When I was in South Carolina, people would go berzerk throwing stuff up into the trees to knock the pecans loose and some of the stuff they threw would stay in the tree. I walked under a pecan tree one day when the wind was blowing and a pitch fork fell out and darn near hit me.

I wish we had that problem, but after two years of great production, all our trees are on their off year. Too bad the last two years the pecan weevils got all the nuts.

Squirrls are giving me trouble getting the pecans. 17HMR does a number on them when I hit them. Success rate so far over 50% which does not satisfy me.

One local orchard farmer has a system he is trying, A large sound system with a helecopter takeing off activated by a motion senser on his front porch set off by passing vehicles. The speaker is in the middle of the orchard and is very loud [sounds like a real helicopter]
