IH766 hydraulics

I started my 766 diesel Saturday morning while it was still very cool out and did not have any steering and when put into gear it just sat there. I then shutoff and checked the hydraulic fluid level and it registered at the full line. Having heard before to overfill the hydraulics I added a couple of gallons of hytran and started the tractor and let fast idle for a few minutes and regained both the steering and the gears engaged. Am I on the verge of needing a major hydraulic pump job or is this something I can attempt to work on myself. Is it ok and how much can you overfill the hydraulics to compensate for a problem. I am of average mechanical ability but have never attempted to tackle anything hydraulic before. Please let me know what you think is my next steps. Thanks very much for any help.

My first thing i would do is change the filter . IF the oil looks milky then i would drain the system and install new Hy Tran . When ya get the filter out tear it apart and take a real close look at it . As far as the over fill it will not hurt a thing . As to the hyd pumps in your tractor i don't have a clue as to them being good bad or ugly . And with out having someone that has a FLOW RATER do the whole test of the main hitch pump and the MCV pump we are all guessing . So i am not going to tell you to run out and buy both pumps . As to why it did this well mybe it was the fliter being plugged a bit maybe the o/ring between the range transmission and the speed transmission is hard and not sealing well maybe the mcv pump is just getting weak . As for changing out the pumps yourself ya it is not hard but there are somethings that you would need to know BEFORE ya start and not till after you are done. So here is where having atleast and I T Manual comes into play.

Before you go crazy I'd check the seal on the Hyd filter. If any air is getting in the system won't work. New Hyd filter next and change the big O-Ring with a new one and make sure your don't pinch it when you install it.

Beyone this you'll need a manual on how to test the system.
