Watched a canadian farm show on sunday. It was all about folks who attached two tractors and used them to farm. Fellow said he charged about 4 thousand dollars to do the job which i thought was a lot of money for back in those days but he also said the joined machines had a ton of horsepower and only used about 40 percent of the fuel of two seperate tractors. They dont do it anymore because we have huge tractors now.Has anyone ever done this or have a pic to post it is very unique.

I remember back when I was about 5 years old,Dad took me to see one plowing near here. They had hooked 2 JD As together. That was the only one that I ever remember seeing in person.

I recently saw on "Utube", a TRIPLE-JD 830..!!!

I think it may be the original "Double", extended with one more 830..

I think he had joined most makes of tractors into "doubles", back in the 60's.

I think you can find them on Utube..

You are referring to Don Dufner from Buxton, ND. I have ridden in his triple 830 John Deere; very nice machine!!

A lot of farmers around the country doubled tractors in the 60s. Allis, Case, JD, IH, etc. No way near the fuel savings you're talking about, or that kind of cost. Simply did it to pull a bigger plow, FC, disc, etc. Led to the Versatile, Steiger, and others. Farm Journal and Successful Farming magazines had stories about them in the 60s. One even coupled two tractors and added a motor on the back of the second, running through the pto... Billy Watkins in IL. Rolled along with a 5 bottom plow....big in those days. Another did it on the cheap- couple old Case tractors in front of a 2 and 3 bottom plow.

My Dad had a D17 and a D15 hooked together pulling a Oliver 5/14" Plow back in the 1960's,used the Tandem Tractor Hook up for 4-5 years and finally got a D21 to pull the Plow with. I was pulling an AC mounted 4/14" Plow at the same time with my AC 190 Gas Engined Tractor. I tried to convince him to get a 6/14" for the D21 but he resisted that notion. He tried to convince me to get a 190XT Diesel and go to 5/14" Plow but I resisted that notion.

All from Rollag WMSTR 2008, my Kodak Z760 camera did the work.

Dad had a super m and an m hooked together in the 60's pulled 6-14's with it and 2 12 ft squadron hitched discs

You guys need to come to the Half Century Of Progress IV - August 27-30, 2009. If it's any thing like the previous years there should be several doubles on hand. Held in Rantoul, Ill.
