soot in oil

Diesel engines make more smoke than gas engines. We've all seen a hard working diesel tractor with a plume of dark smoke coming out of the exhaust. Due to blow by some of the soot that makes the exhaust dark ends up going through the crankcase and blackens the engine oil. Diesel engine oil has additives to control the soot that gets in the oil and keep it from clumping up and plugging something up.
 
Like mjb says. Diesels produce more smoke - some blows by the rings - presto! - black oil!!
(Remember the compression ratios in modern diesels.)
 
elevated, as in turned up from factory setting fuel injection pressure will result in more than normal soot in the oil.

My old tractor had suit in the oil a couple of years ago. Suit urned to oil because, in my case, it was a bad haedgasket. Just replaced it (the HG) and don't know my tractor any more. Sooner or later you may end up doing the same.

Soot is a very fine form of carbon that results from incomplete combustion of carbon based fuels, whether that be oil or wood or coal or something else. It"s what you see coming out of the exhaust on a diesel engine under heavy throttle, where there"s more fuel going into the cylinder than is completely burned. Because of the high compression in a diesel, there"s always some blowby, which forces the soot past the rings, where it collects in the oil. It"s why even properly tuned diesl turns oil black a lot faster than a gas engine.

Some soot in the oil is normal for diesel engines. Soot in the oil is only a problem if you have excessive blowby. The dertergents in the oil hold normal soot in suspension so it doesn't cause a problem.

The high pressures in the cylinder due to the 16-18:1 compression ratios cause some soot to blowby at max power with its high fuel/air ratios where excessive fuel is being injected and there is unburned fuel in the cylinder.

I might add that gas engines running overly rich can soot oil also.
