dual rear wheel question?

had a neighbor that used to plow with 2 david browns and 2 three bottom plows, each tractor had one dual for plowing. was it the Furrow wheel that had the dual and what is the advantage/disadvantage of only one dual.

The surface soil usually has more moisture and stubble residue on it providing somewhat less traction than the fresh cut furrow. Two tires will not fit in the furrow anyway. The earth is more compacted down there, and has a sidewall to keep soil under the tire.
A minor other issue is that the tractor is tipped at a 6 to 8 degree angle leaning the center of gravity (read weight) over the furrow wheel. JimN

no it was the land wheel that had the dual.when you plow you want more weight on the land side also it"s easier to bolt the dual on than wrestle 2 more weights on

Funny... I've always found that the furrow wheel had the disadvantage in most cases. I'd hazard a guess that most duals on the left side were on there most of the time and that the right one was removed for plowing, not the left one added.
I always plow on singles.

If you think about it, there is only room for one wheel in the furrow. :) That side has to be a single.

The on land side can be a dual. In my heavy clay soils, the tire in the furrow has alot of grip. The tire up on the soil surface is dealing with looser soil, wetter soil, cornstalk trash - it has less grip. The dual doesn't always do much, but it helps a little.

Mostly, no point to taking it off, the tractor runs duals for all other operations, might as well leave it on. It's not in the way.

Never gave it much thought. I was just too lazy to take both duals off, so I just took the one off the furrow wheel while I was plowing so the wheel would fit in the furrow.

Just speaking for myself,I usually have the duals on for hauling manure, discing, chisel plowing, etc. Why take them both off when I'm going to have to put them back on for fitting ground anyway?

well i have used a moldboard plow plenty, i guess growing up with a on land plow i am retarded in the ways of farming! thanks for your responce.

Just a side note guys and or gals the soil people say if you need a duel wheel to plow it"s too wet to do it. Form your own opinion it really is hard to get out of that habit we ran into that years ago and switched to chisel plowing and you know what? Shhh, they were right you have to travel quite a ways to find a molboard plow here these days. IMHO

I don't know about not being able to plow with duals in the furrow, I never once plowed with a single wheel in the furrow on my 5020. It had all 4 tires loaded and it ran very well in the furrow with the weight to settle the first rolled furrow a bit. That is the only tractor I ever tried it with but I pulled the 5 bottom Deere across alot of our clay acres that way.
