Worst auction buys?

The post below got me thanking. What has been the worst deal you have gotten at a sale?

Mine was a set of 18.4-34's with about 50% tread, not weathered any. I looked at them before the sale and could not see any thing wrong with the top one, the top of the bottom one or the inside of them. Bought'm for $200. The bottom one had a huge chunk out of the side wall.

Lesson leared- never buy tractor tires at a sale unless you have some one to help you flip them both over and get a good look at them.

Lets promiss not to make fun of each other, I told my biggest bone headed move, whats yours?

I had a near miss one time I'm going to share:

Dad sent me to an auction to buy a White 435 disk chisel- around this area, they are kinda hard to come by. We looked at this unit at the farmers once, but it was in the weeds--seemed to look nice, so we decided on our top dollar for auction day. Day comes, and I wait and wait. We finally are coming up on the unit so I get into position on the back side of the unit. Just then the guy beside me told another guy "look at that!" low and behold the tube that the axle arms are welded onto is just about split in two! Bidding happens, sells under the price we were willing to go (of course I didnt buy it) and the new owner feels like the got a heck of a deal. That guy beside me took him behind the unit....and a slap to his forehead is the last thing I saw as I walked away. Lucky day for me...

A disc mower. It needed a new gear box. Everything turned ok at the auction, then when I got it home and checked the gearbox oil I saw that the oil was out due to a bad bottom seal and the bearings were gone. Lesson: Always takt the plug out of gear boxes and check oil level and condition of gears you can see.

Same thing KY,on a pair of 14.9x38 tires at an auction.Bottom one had a split in the sidewall, they had piled other tires on top,and sold the whole pile.Didn't check it,lesson learned.

3 miniture donkeys. I got all excited and competitive during the bid process. Didn't really need them, of course nobody does. It did, however, give everyone something to refer to everytime my judgement is questioned.

JD tractor that PTO didn't work on. Yeah learned to check it all next time no more impulse bids at auctions if didn't check it all out before.

Um... this is just like a thread I saw on the vintage snowmobile collectors association website. This is the second one like that. I think there may be something to that but haven't put my finger on it yet.

I bought a 430 JD at a sale that looked pretty good, but had an engine miss. The owner swore it just needed a spark plug and was in excellent condition.I guess i believed him,big mistake. It didn't have an compression on one cylinder, cracked head and block.

Got a real nice hay wagon once, trailed home just fine. Price was good too. Next day the wagon was gone and so was my money. Did someone follow me home?? first and only thing stole from the farm. Bob

Knock on wood, I havent had a bad deal yet on land or equipment from an auction. Missed a few good ones but I"ve been careful. At the stockyards is where I"ve made mistakes. Way too many old cows, wild cows, cows with blind udder quarters and all that. Thats why I raise my own now.

About the same thing. I needed a pair of 9x40s for an antique. Bought a nice pair for $220 on IH wheels, too heavy to tip up. The bottom one was cut along the bead for about 18 inches.

Bought a Maytag 92 mounted to a tiller contraption for $15. Engine turned over, had compression, seemed like an easy fix. Took it apart to discover everything is shot from the dust of the tiller going through it. Have over $300 worth of parts in it now, still need another $60 or so worth to get it running. But hey, that's why it's called a "hobby" right?

Other than that one, every auction purchase I've done has turned out pretty good... so far.

Four calves. All four had pneumonia. One little heifer calf was pregnent. The pneumonia spread to other cows and one died. We had to put the littled heifer down during birth too small to have the calf. Pretty much a total disaster.
