The post below made me wonder what your best auction purchases ever were, for your own use or for resale.

Mine for resale was a Hybco axial relief grinding fixture loaded with tooling. Bought it at a sharpening shop auction for $110.00 plus buyers premium and listed it on ebay and it finished out at $3,050.00, I dam near fell over backwards when I saw the final bid.

My next best buy for use was a super a with every implement made for it except for I think a cotton planter and 2 or 3 other pieces. Has the 2 way plow setup, creeper, remotes and a bunch of other optional accessories. Perfectly straight, just needed paint, $1,425.00 plus premium.

What are some of your best buys?

NOS john deere garden tractor PTO for $25 then sold for $750. still a good deal for the buyer as I was told new at dealer list was $1400. bill m.

Not too happy with auctions. Usually see people pay too much for things that are not all there or not likely to operate. Flea markets and garage sales much better. Conversely, if selling, auctions bring more money every time.

1 24 ft trailer of chicken nest boxes and feeders. $10. Still got a few pieces, gave a bunch to friends whoose kids were in 4H.

Best for me is hard to say. Best ones that come to mind are 7' sidewinder rotary mower for $100, Vermeer 605c I was thinking would be good for parts and turned out better than the one I'd been useing for $300, 2 tobacco wagons for $25, pile of about 100 uses T post for $15, pile of about 20 light pole corner post and well over a mile of good barb wire for $50, no one wants to buy used fence stuff but you can go to Rural King and buy bunk feeders or hay rings new, take'm to a sale and make good money.

I did not get rich off it buy no means but by far the best mark up I have ever got'n on resell'n stuff was a pile of tobacco sticks. Dead guy's nephew and the auction ring man figured there was bout 500 in the pile. My brother and I looked at each other and grinned. I bought the pile for $5. Went back the next day with a trailer, baller twine, and a stick horse and started sorting, counting, and bundeling them up. Ended up with just over 2200 good useable stick!!!! Put 2000 of them in a pile seperate from mine and ran them in a free ad in local paper the next August for $.12 each and let an old boy talk me down to a dime. $5 and half a days work turned into $200 pretty easy.

In the early 70's I went to a farm sale. On the hayrack stuff was a double cantilever tool carry tool box. I got it for 3.50 (or so). When they handed it to me off the rack it was HEAVY. Inside was an almost full 3/4 drive socket set. This was before the cheap stuff got to our shores.

I still have it.

My favorite thing is a small, private farm auction with a dozen or two bidders.

Soon as I go to a consignment auction with a hundred loud, old farts bellowing and annoying me, I just want to go home when I hear how much of their social security is paying for stuff.

Going to break your heart here 1979 Massey 750 combine with 15 foot u2 real 1163 six row corn head plus header cart for 2750 buck , same sale 1975 1066 with cab and air all worked plus full rack of ft weights 5 sets of 150's on the back quick hitch and extra fuel tank 4250 bucks two 706 gassers one wide ft and one narrow ft go to the field good 3100 for the pair 7030 allis darn near mint 3250 it's sister a 7040 Allis same shape near mint 4250 both with weights and duals . the 1066 sold for 9550 the 7030 sold 8750 and the 7040 sold 9850 the 706's the narrow ft 4750 and 5250 for the wide ft. now the combine i had to put money in i had to rebuild the alt.bout broke the heart putting out that kind of money in repairs on that one . Sold it to a buddy and i was to easy on him let him have the whole deal for 4250 BUT he had to go and pick it up . There are deals at just about every sale if ya know what your doing and know where to send it . All them tractors were bought on Sat. and were history by wensday

Well I have had a few good ones. A manure spreader that I payed $5 for and it had 9 sheets of roof tin and 2 3/4inch buy 6 foot cables in it. The next one was a Gallion road roller I payed $125 for and sold the front roller off of it for $200. Probably many more but can't remember them right now. Oh by the way the manure spreader worked with just 2 new floor bars and a good oiling up of the chains

Mine probably are: a mostly complete 10-20 McCormick Deering for 50 bucks, a MM GVI that runs for 425, or a NOS early 40's john deere rain gauge/thermometer advertising the local dealer of the day new in the box with extra glass measuring deals for 50 bucks...

I've had a few good buys. Bought 6 smaller and 2 large channel iron saw horses for $7.50 each. A couple of flow meters for about $20 and a straight Victor torch for a pipe beveler for $30. At another Auction I bought a 10 year old Miller trailblazer 55 diesel welder with Arctic modification, that runs MIG and stick, that was used for automatic pipeline welding, for $2750. A new one at the time was about $18,000. I bought 3 Humus 3 pt. automatic tree row cultivators for $300 each and sold one for $2400. They were around $8000 when new. I don't think anybody knew what the Humus machines were for and the same thing with the welder. There were 8 welders for sale. I didn't even have the top bid but did bid earlier and then the auctioneer asked who else wanted one, starting with the other bidders. Again I don't think anyone knew what the difference was with these welders. You'd think with 3 times more adjustments and meters and such on them than a standard welder, people would realize they weren't your everyday welding machine. 400 amp, 100% duty cycle for both MIG and stick. It's nice to get a good deal sometimes. Usually what I want is what 10 other people want. Dave

hard to find 3 digit series Oliver deluxe seat frame- bought for 2 dollars, sold for 120 on YT ads, within an hour of posting (had a second call before I got the ad deleted)

I had one better yet, but I wont share that one...felt like I almost stole it(was thru a buy it now option on ebay, and the dealership had no clue what they had)

Bought a Ford 5000 diesel back in 1984 for $2900. Still using it and had very few repairs over the years. Worn out 3 seats on it.
Also a JD 3020 diesel about 3 years ago for $3500. Always makes me laugh when people talk about how JD is so overpriced.

5 or 6 yeas ago, I bought a MF 750 parts combine at a sale for $40. Had to drag it 10 miles home. The motor is in my Oliver 1850. Took the straw walkers out and replaced some of mine, shafts in the throat were good, replaced a couple of bent ones in my machine, still have 4 good tires to fall back on. Anybody need a 4 speed hydro tranny? Chris

just thought of another one, antique Caterpiller road grader that that i had seen in the weeds,at the time the family thought was worth $300 to $400,at the estate auction I got it for $35, still using it a couple times a year to this day. bill m.

Land. I bought 190 acres of rocks, stumps, hills, scrub trees and weeds for $39,000 at an estate auction back in the early 70's. Most wasn't much more than a tax liability. Lived there for a while. An industrial park started up just down the road. In time it expanded and needed my ground. 1.4 mil later, it looks like I made a good purchase.

Bought a good old Dewalt 12"radial arm saw of 1950's vintage for $5.00. No one would bid on it so I ended up with it. Two legs were bent on the stand, the table was rotted off and the wiring was in the same shape as the rest. Took it home, plugged it in and it ran fine so I disassembled, cleaned, painted it up and $100 later, including purchase price and new blade, I had a good old cast Iron saw that looked and worked like new. I use it a lot. Jim

Bought a new IHC pull type Electral pto generator for $100.After the sale the owners son came over and gave me the books, said his dad bought it new in the 50's just in case, stuck it in the barn, but never used it.Still had the uninstalled pto shaft wired to the frame.Have used it several times, works great.

B ought an old Snapper mower at auction for 30 bucks in 1994,It was 20 years old or so then, still have it and havent done a thing to it but change the oil. Dont use it as much now-a-days since I have a bigger mower.

Contents of upstairs parts room for $32 in 1981. House and garage auction living estate got 2500 pounds plus of machine steel, brass and aluminum for $50 in 2002. Had to load it all myself no forklift :(

Bought a 315 IH combine for $325, sold it for $900. Bought an F with 3 heads for $2000. Sold the corn head for $3250, used the bean head and pickup head for years, still have the combine. Got a 'choice' bid on Gleaner A638 head or pickup head for M/L for $250. Took both. Rented the corn head to a neighbor that fall for $5 per acre- more than paid for the head. Bought a WC engine for $5 off a junk pile- block was cracked on bottom side, but inside was a near-new set of 45 sleeves and pistons. Must have been a summer overhaul, forgot to put AF in come fall.

Not car/truck or tractors but how does this sound.
Large working HVAC oven....$150, old place closed up and sold the oven.
Large engine lathe, 14 inch swing, perfect working condition, $600 (with digital readouts)
great machine for toolroom work, details general machine work.

Bought a 1949 John Deere A a couple years ago. I'm still restoring it. I paid $575 for it and sold the live pump (which I would probably never use) here in the YT Photo Ads for $330, so I got the tractor cheap and used the money I got for the pump for part of the payment of another tractor.

john deere 44 two bottom plow new rubber with cylinder $25 works greast for our deer plots. grandad bought a good running orignal john deere g at a local sale a couple years ago for 1500

Put new alternator on it - $129
Put new tires on it - $400
New Battery - $65
New gas tank - $185
Wife drove away in it when she left me.

Best Deal I've ever made. 8~)

Went over to a used machinery dealer on a Sat. morning looking for a part. I was charged a 5 dollar admission because they were having an auction. Well I hung around and got drawn in. Started bidding on a restored 1936 JD A on cutoffs. Bought it for $1200. I went to drive it 20 miles home and realized it moves out over the prairie at five and a half miles an hour. Had much time on the road to reflect on my purchase. Have enjoyed this old tractor alot. It's probably worth 4 times what I paid for it. Wish my real estate had increased in value as much.

Bought a John Deere 10A hammermill with bagger that had a fresh coat of paint for $35 .....a few sales later I saw one in rough shape....thought I might get it for parts...nope...went for over $200.....

Also bought a Bickford drill press...MT4 with a Jacobs chuck on it, converted to twin v-belts powered by a large electric motor transfering power thru a Ford 4 speed tranny.....I have multiple speeds due to a reversing motor switch....neat setup.....all for $40......no one was bidding because it was so large...buddy nudged me....I bid, won, and then said "how the h*ll am I gettin that home"....luckily the sale was only a short distance from my one building and a buddy bought a Farmall H with loader....gave him $10 to pick it up and haul it down....slowly....
