ive been looking at several train sites but unable to answer a question i have, its for a kid. but on a modern railroad locomotive, set up to run short hood foward, what is in the area under the hood? there is a door there on some of them, and obviously the rear facing long hood contains the engine and generators ect, but now he has me courious too ive never had the oportunity to see in there and all the cab shot pics show the operating controles, but not foward into that area, is it just wiring ect?

About twenty years ago I was traveling on Amtrak and they had a locomotive set up for display in Denver. The only thing I can remember being in the compartment was the inside outhouse.
My brother is an engineer. Next time I talk with him I'll try to remember to ask.

I"m a locomtoive engineer. When you come up the steps into the cab there is a door. Within that door is a small storage area for a broom and fusses or flares. its mostly a safty buffer. then there is another door that goes into the cab. As you enter that door there is a bathroom on your right and more electronics on your left and small storage area. Its 3 steps up to the operating platform and half way up those steps under the conductors desk is the fridge. If I could figure out how to post a picture i"d put one on for you. I"ll take one next time i go to work.

Depending on the maker, it may have a toilet (that might be nicknamed the sandbox) in there, but on most it is actually where the sandbox, the reservoir for the wheel sanders, is located.

thanks for the responces, yes we'd appreciate a pic if you have the time, this came about as i was showing a 9 year old some in cab photos of different locomotives, and of course he asked the one question that i really had no idea of a correct answer, aint grandkids fun? we dont have a local railroad here or we could just go and ask somebody

I'm not allowed to run the train, the whistle I can't blow.

I'm not allowed to say how far the railroad cars can go.

I'm not allowed to blow off steam, or even ring the bell.

But let the damned thing jump the tracks, then see who catches H*ll !!

I do know a train can't get hit by lightening because the engineer isn't a conductor.

Here's a photo of the inside of a NS locomotive.

I use to be an engineer and wr is right on the newer comfort cabs but on the old junk we had scott is correct there was a short or tall door depending on nose size and the toilet is in there. Very cold in the winter for doing your duty.
