424 IH replacing transmission fluid

I need help after replacing the PTO shaft seal I lost most of the Hy Trans fluid. Per the dealer I was told to fill it from the fill plug next to shift level until it starts to weep out of the side plug on the lower left side of the tractor. I lost about 2 1/2 to 3 gals, system only holds 5, however after adding only 1/2 gal it started coming out of the side plug. This can"t be correct, I ordered a service manual by Clymer, but it doesn"t say anything about this I need some help?

I'm not SURE, but I thought the tranny was supposed to have 90-weight gear oil in it.

The hydraulic system reservoir is separate, in the 3-point hitch mechanism housing and holds HyTran/UTF. That filler is just to the right rear side of the operator's seat.

Your tractor's transmission likely was overfull to start with.

FIrst of all you should use Hy-Trans hydraulic oil like you said. The rear end where the pto shaft and the rear end gears are must be filled prior to putting the top back on the tractor. it does hold 5 gallons.

the shifter area is the same oil. the fluid level plug was on the right side of my 424 gas burner.

The hydraulic lift and power steering is in a resivoir under the seat and is seperate from the oil we are discussing but it uses the same type.

What do you mean that I need to fill rear end gears prior to putting the top back on? The only thing I removed was the flange at the rear that houses the PTO seal and once I had it replace put the flange back on and preceided to fill the transmission per dealer instruction. Do I need to run something on the tractor after filling transmission to circule the fluid before adding more to get to proper level? I just can't believe the transmission was 2 to 2 1/2 gal over full.

i remember that my fill level plug was on the right side if you are sitting on the tractor, when i was draining the housing for working on the pto shaft i had to pull the seat assembly which houses the power steering fluid off. prior to re-assembly i filled the resivoir with 5 gal. of fluid as it called for which i believe was a little over the fill plug. one way for sure is to pull the plug from the bottom of the rear end and drain it completely. put 5 gallons of oil back through the fill hole in the side of the gear shift area.

My brother and I own what he told me was a 1971 model 424 diesel. I have just completed work on the hydraulic system and did a complete front to back checkout of fluids and filters. Our tractor does not have power steering. All told there are 4 chambers that contain oil of some sort. The crankcase is one and we use 10w-40w. From the tractor front to back the next chamber is just south of the clutch assembly. On some units this is where a forward/reverse mechanism is installed resulting in 8 forward and reverse gears when coupled with the Road Gear shifter and the regular 4-speed transmission. I drained and then filled this with 90w. The next section is the transmission which is also open to the differential area. There are two sump areas to drain in order to thoroughly clean it out. Again we filled this with 90w, and yes it takes about 5 gallons, actually it looks like it took a bit over 4 gallons. The last chamber is the hydraulic section that is a self contained cast iron chamber that sits right below the seat. We filled this with Hy-Tran, I think it took about 3 gallons. Now as to the filler plugs. Obviously the engine oil goes in the top of the hood area, just pull off the breather cap and pour it in. The 'shuttle gear' or forward/reverse chamber has a filler plug on the left side of the tractor's cast housing as one sits in the seat facing the steering wheel. We used a siphon gun, kind of like a grease gun with a retractable handle that sucks the oil into the gun and then, with a push of the handle, the oil is discharged into the chamber. Fill until the oil starts to come out of the plug hole. The transmission/differential chamber is filled from a plug just to the right of the shifter. Straight down from the filler plug there is a level-checking plug on the right side of the tractor near the level of the floor plate. Fill into the top plug until oil comes out of the side plug. The hydraulic system is filled through a plug at the extreme right rear top corner of the cast iron housing. When you look into the hole you can see a sleeve that extends down into the chamber. Fill with Hy-Tran until the fluid starts to come into the sleeve area. I hope this helps. As we are not acquainted with all 424 models there may be some differences.
