Farmall A or B?

I recently purchased what I first thought was a Farmall B w/a woods belly mower from an auction.

After I got it home I cleaned it and looked for the serial number under the seat where it is supposed to be... it wasn't there.

I recently looked at other Farmall A's and B's on the internet and the B I purchased looks more narrow like the A but it has a narrow front like the B

Any help in identifying this machine?

I've seen posts like this so many times I'm starting to think there's a factory somewhere that's either narrowing up the rear ends of B's by replacing the left axle with an A axle or replacing the fronts of A's with a B front.

There's probably no definite way to be sure which you have. The nameplate will tell you what the seat bracket was originally installed on, and the engine block will tell you what the engine block was originally installed in, but either of those can be changed.

On a "B", the engine and drivetrain are centered between the rear wheels.

On an "A" the engine and drivetrain are offset to the left of the centerline between the rear wheels.

It's POSSIBLE to swap either front axle to either tractor. A LOT can happen to a tractor in 50 or 60 years!

Hmm . I spent alot of time on B's . They all had either 1 or 2 wheels , narrow front . The seat was closer to right side wheel . I thought A's were similar only wide front ?

Once again, "B" chassis is centered between rear wheels, "A" chassis is offset to the left.

Serial number is also on the side of the block. Right hand side as your sitting on it behind and just forward of the distributor. What you may have is a BN almost the same as a normal B but the N stands for narrow which is a B with a narrow rear end set up but still a trike. If I remember right its about 18 inches narrower then a normal B

A Farmalls are Offset to the left
B Farmalls are not (and often have narroe front with a different front casting). They are essentially the same except for those elements.
The C and superC replaced the B and BN (narrow) with a different operator position and Hydrsulics! JimN

I tried to post a pic ,,,but am lost as how to do it ? Look over in "Tractor photos , several nice B's , clearly shows difference between A's and B's looking at tractor from rear , B will have longer axle on left side . Drivers seat offset toward right wheel. Pic is worth thousand words.

From the picture, it's clear that you have a B/BN front end. Your seat and mount are after-market, and I'm guessing that the original left-hand seat mount with the serial number plate (that would have the original model stamped on it) is among the missing.

What isn't clear from the picture is what the left side looks like. Is there a cast housing, 30-36" wide. flat on the top, round on the bottom, between the transmission and the final drive? If so, then your tractor most likely started life as the B that it still is. If not, and the left-side final drive is bolted up directly to the tranny, then you likely have a hybrid of one of the types that I described over on the Farmall board. In the absence of the Serial number plate, there is no way to tell from the engine serial number which way it started out.
