I have a small wagon of cob corn that I want to grin for feed for my dairy steers(weight800-1000, I have 100# of 40% pellets. I ussually have 1000# of rolled corn mixed with 100# of pellets. Can any one tell me how many #'s of pellets to add to a certain #'s of ground ear corn? Also, I have my nursing beef calves on creep feed, Oats, pellets, rolled corn, no molassis, a few of the early calves are about that 450-500# size and the youngest is about 250#(?)maybe more. What should I be giving them for feed? Should I start increasing the amount of corn in their ration? I see some people feeding straight corn and pellets free choice at this size in other pastures, others I have seen them feeding oats and pellets.2 of the heifers will be kept as replacementsm one bull calf will be a breeding bull next year, if the guy is still takingg him, and the rest will be sold or I will keep and finish them out myself.

Good Morning - several questions
What level of protein are your pellets?
What level of protein is you ear corn?
Google Pierson Square and this will give a way to calculate the ration you need for the calves.
I have forgotten the protein requiresment for cattle.
Using the Pierson square will get you close - otherwise see your nutritionist at your local feemill

In addition to what Ken has said.........contact your local Extension Agent; they may have a livestock specialist on staff; if not, they can pull information from the State level. I fed/back-grounded calves for decades and I wouldn"t depend on what some unknown-to-me poster recommended on a "wanna-be farmer/yuppie/small time gardener" site.........

You really have two 'herds'- due to their end use. Those you want to feed out can make rapid gains on a straight shelled corn and pellet program, like Doboy has on their Tenderleen plan. They grow fast and lean, but build a relatively small frame. On your breeding stock you want more roughage to grow a decent size frame, and that will take more time.

You can buy a copy of ''Feeds and Feeding'' by professor Morrison on e-bay for $5.00 or so. I think the 22nd edition/revision is the most recent. This was one of the main textbooks for many years and is full of useful and interesting information. The book has several feed charts and reccomended rations for all classes of livestock.

Dave, the holsteins at the weights you stated will require a 12% protein finishing ration. Your ear corn will average about 7% protein and your pellets are 40%. To come up with a 12% ration you will need 300 pounds of pellets and 1700 pounds of ground ear corn per ton. The ear corn will have less protein than regular shelled corn because of the cob factor, thus you need more supplement. If you want to hand mix this, mix 5.66 pounds of ear corn and 1 pound of supplement. Depending upon what weight you take the steers to, you can decrease tha amount of protein in the ration. Once the steers get over 1100 pounds, you can cut the protein content down to 10%. I have spent 38 years as a livestock nutritionist. As suggested, the Pearson Square is a fine tool for calculating the ingredient requirements for a given protein content needed. Hope this helps.
