A couple days ago, someone posted the scrap prices. In it was listed inner tubes for $.03 a pound. What do they do with the old tubes?

Un reinforced rubber can be reused, by processing, and shredded for uses like Athletic field jumping pits. Reinforced rubber (tires belting etc) has so much tramp metal and plastic fiber in it that it has far less if any (today) value. JimN

I drove for a trucking company that used old truck inner tubes for tarp straps. It worked good, if you needed a stronger or longer strap you just doubled up.

scrap tires ( unless they are "high treads", which are generally exported) generally get chipped up. Sidewall rubber (the stuff without steel belt material) can be used for footing on athletic feilds, play grounds, etc- my 100 x 200 riding arena is 4" deep in the stuff, and it's great for feet! the chipped up tread rubber with the steel belt material is sold as fuel- burned in cement kilns, power plants, etc. I'm told by Lakin General and Norman Emmanuel, my scrap tire haulers, that they have no problem selling it once it's chipped. FYI, it costs a tire store about a buck a tire to haul 'em away...when i first started in the business, they paid US 25 cents each for 'em!
