Bull Jersey calves? I know 4H projects and the like but is there any commercial need or value to the animals ?? I raised a couple and it takes foooorrreeevvvveeer ot get any size..

I remember Jersey bull calves as a particularly troubling aspect of the dairy business. They were worth less than the commission to sell them at auction (in the '50's, and I suspect today as well), to they got taken out behind the barn and "knocked in the head". You just hate to kill a baby anything, but business is business.

Yes Mike, that is exactly what happened in the 50's. I grew up on a small farm in wPA, milked an average of 35 jersey cows. The bulls were keep long enough to clear the colostrum and bumped in the head.

Sometimes the coon & cat hunters would pick them up for dog food. We always had 3 - 4 hunting dogs but never feed them whole calves for fear they would develop a taste for them and kill off some of the heifers.

I totally agree with the time line of raising them. Grandpa use to get them for nothing from a dairy up the road and feed them out on easter candy when his brother worked at the manufacturing plant out in sioux city. Did pretty good when he didnt have to pay for much corn and hay and with all that sugar they were getting, they looked like a million bucks!

I tried raising a Jersey bull calf as a teenager.. Paid 20 for him, bought over 80 dollars in milk replacer and feed, not to count all the ground feed and hay my Dad let me feed. Calf only brought 55 dollars at the auction. But it was educational..

Calves with a sugar buzz and bad teeth, LOL... There is a place here that makes the expensive crackers. Some farmers go there and get the "rejects" to feed to cattle. I have even grabbed a few of the damaged boxes.. Just a few cracked crackers in the box.. They tasted fine to me..

Never done Jerseys but bought and feed out a few Holstein steers. Got them to over 1200lbs in less then a year. My Black Angus were only 200lbs more. Tasted Fine...
